Wideman is not the ideal answer for our top 4, but he's much better than borderline NHL #7 we just called up at this point.

Why is Versteeg out? Did I miss something? I know he's been in a bit of discomfort since that collision with Brouwer but is he actually injured, or is it just precautionary?
He's been one of the better forwards when healthy and adds an important element of creativity that few players outside of Johnny bring to the table. Sucks to have him out.

took a crosscheck to the ribs 2 games ago re-aggrivating the injury he got from the Brouwer collision.
He missed last game as well.
Gulutzan says they hope to have him back in the lineup soon.

What about the Sens? No one hates the Sens. No one feels anything towards them actually.
Although my 3 year old son is oddly into them.

One of my close friends is a huge Jets fan. I told him it was going to be 5-3 Flames. He thinks the Jets are going to win 7-3. We shall see.

Gulutzan mentioned this morning that Versteeg's out tonight, but is progressing.

People in toronto hate them. They have had a few playoff matchups. Long time ago, but still

Agreed. I actually think the Sense provoke the least emotion from me among any team in the NHL.
- No history with them
- Not in our conference
- Don't really seem to have much of a passionate fan base.
Nothing to like or dislike.
The Jets.
- Same conference
- Big physical team
- Annoying fans who seem to be trying to make up for last decades of cheering for their team all at once.
Lots of distaste for the Jets (relatively speaking, they're no Canucks, Oilers, Leafs, Habs or Ducks).

Will be happy if Flames score at least two goals in regulation and Jets don't score at least two goals.

I don't think the Jets even register for the Flames as a potential rival. It's still something like this for ranking Flames' rivals:

Exactly, While I understand how people don't like Wideman because of the controversy surrounding him last year, he is still par for the league so far as number four defencemen are concerned.
Of course, I would prefer a young prospect to develop into that roll. That said, Kulak and Wortherspoon have not proved they can take that spot. Therefore we will just have to be patient.

Wotherspoon hasn't even come close. He's had multiple opportunities over multiple seasons. Kid is not an NHLer unfortunately. Kulak on the other hand has promise and has looked good, raw but good, in his time in the NHL.
Neither is an adequate replacement for Wideman, even with his warts.

Kulak has been excellent except his last game and he's been dragging Engelland around every game

Everybody looked bad last year. Kulak looked terrible for the first few weeks of 2015-16. I can't speak for other people, but I remember that he looked horribly overmatched. He blew me away this year, though, with his great improvement.
I don't think 15-16 is the best way to judge the quality of our young defensemen. I want to see Wotherspoon get some solid playing time this year before I truly write him off.
Oh, and by the way... Wotherspoon's CF% last year in his 11 games? 53.0. No Flame defender with over 10 GP was better -- not by a long shot.

Engelland was the only defenseman who was playing well during the early struggles and has been pretty consistent all season. He's done pretty much everything you ask for from a #6 guy.
Was dragged around by Kulak?

Okay I'll bite.
This is an example of why stats don't tell the whole story.
Numbers, as well as words, have been proven to be unable to accurately explain the human condition. Not to say that they are useless, rather, it is to say that they do not unquestionably prove a players ability or inability. Instead, they are a rough measure to explain what the senses tell us.

You say that numbers don't tell the whole story, but then present no counter-arguments at all to what I've said.
