Craftsman garage opener stops in the middle

Last year before wintertime I replaced my garage door opener with the Craftsman with belt not the chain. It works really well but when it gets cold, garage door will stop. The only way to open it properly is go to the main switch and hold the switch until it completely open the door. It is getting so annoying because this happens everytime it gets cold. Does anyone else have this problem? You figured you spend the money and it should work.

Mine occasionally does the same thing when it gets really cold. Not sure if there is a solution to it, I always just hold the button down til it gets past the point where it tends to get a false resistance signal.

Just looked it up, and it appears that you could try to adjust the downforce for the winter. Sounds like the lubricating oil gets a bit thicker in the cold weather which creates resistance and causes the opener to think there is an obstruction, which then kicks in the safety reverse feature.

Hey, mine has been doing the same thing all week. I end up pressing the button 6 times, goes up and down 3 times, 3rd time is the charm seems like.
By the way, did you change the motor yourself? Hard? Easy?

This happened to me for a few years. It's usually that in the cold there is more resistance to the door going down so it thinks there is an obstruction and reverses.

For a possibly quick and cheap fix, buy some jig-a-loo or silicone spray and spray the heck out of the track and wheels. I did that last fall and got through the entire winter without it happening again.

Yes. Apartment dwellers should have a milk crate or 2 labelled "workshop".

The belt should have a tensioner in it, you may want to try and adjust it slightly.

I replaced the whole thing and I had a bit of a problem. Last year when the door wouldn't open at all, I put WD40 on the track for the door. It works for a few weeks but it went back to the same problem when it gets cold. I guess I'll try that silicone spray and spray the heck out of the track and also by the door. I might buy them tomorrow and try it. I never have that problem with my old garage door with the chain track. Too bad that garage door died on me after 6-7 years.

I wish I thought of this years ago, but every apartment dweller should have a dolly style tool chest. You can get the ones with a big ass bottom drawer for things like silicone spray and grease gun.

Canadian tire carries specific garage door lubricant

I bought the Jig-A-Loo Silicone spray at Canadian Tire this morning for $6.99 and used it to spray all the tracking and moving parts on my garage opener and damn that thing works well. Garage door is now opening all the way and closing properly too.

You should spray the torsion spring on your garage door too. That's an often overlooked part.

FYI... WD40 is not a lubricant. It is a water displacer. Any lubricating effects it gives are only temporary until the solvents evaporate.

The garage door openers have a re calibrating function built into their circuit board which commonly needs to be reset, I know this guy Falclore on here that knows all about it.
