It's been my experience that unions aren't typically interested in getting the best wages for the best workers. They are, on the other hand, more concerned with making sure that the lowest common denominator is well cared for.
In a lot of unionized workplaces the best workers could, theoretically, do better for themselves in a free market situation where they can be compensated comensurate with their skills. The poorest workers, however, would do much worse without the union safety net.

Exactly. So I make the same amount of money as bertha who has no skills with her mouth, but got the job cause she'd take her pants off and lay there. If I'm going to prostitute myself, I demand a high price... I'm no toothless Bertha and I shouldn't be paid like one. It might be my first night on the job, but I should make more money than 9/10ths of the women out there... you can't tell me we're all going to make the same.
Just as an example. I'm not a prostitute, but if I were, I'd cost a lot. Much more than the lowest common denomenator, hence, no union.

You don't put the dog down because the dog has nothing to do with it (unless you rode your dog to the street corner). Your house? Well obviously that is a private place not like in the middle of a back alley.
Without their car it would be much harder to these losers to go down town and do what they do.
It is the same reason why they seize your vehicle when you smuggle something into the country. It is the devise that helps carry out the act.
What kind of arguement is "not everyone owns a vehicle" so it's not fair. by that logic we should be issuing speeding ticket fines based on income because some people make a lot more money than i do so it is not fair that I have to pay a fine the same as someone who makes twice as much as me. Come on.

The point is you do not need a car to hire a hooker. However you do make my point for me with the part about higher fines for higher income earners regarding speeding tickets. You say (and I agree) that speeding should be the same fine regardless of income. Then how can the taking of the car away be fair to everybody when very few people own the exact same car?
Let's be clear on what people's objections are. As Fotze pointed out it needs to be cleaned up because of the public grossness of it. I can see that point. However if your objection is simply a moral one, then I would suggest it is time that as a society that we learn that what goes on behind closed doors between consenting adults should remain a private matter.

Well no... not living there I haven't seen any of those signs. But I do know that the Calgary economy is booming right now, but I bet it is not booming so much that those signs say:
Now Hiring: 14 year old, crack-addicted, school dropout runaways - Top dollar paid...
Just a guess...
Booming economy or not, some people are getting left behind.

Well, almost.
Seriously though, and place with a sign in front isn't displaying specials anymore; they are showing their hiring wages. Some places are even discussing how they will hire people under age too.

Well I have never said that it should be illegal...infact...if you look at several other threads in the past I have said it should be legalized.
It NEEDS to be taken off the streets and we need to prevent dirty men from praying on underaged children. There is no reason what so ever that this kind of activity should take place on our streets, ifront of our children, infront of our homes.

Agreed 100%. I just don't see how forcing it futher underground will do that. I can now see the dirty old men walking around to find their under age targets, and when some regular 15 year old girl who's seen too many Britany Spears videos (or whoever is the current icon now) comes walking around the corner; now she is in danger of being grabbed or something.
I don't have the answer to solve all of this, but taking away the car of somebody who engages the services of a 25 year old prostitute isn't the answer.
And the thing that bothers me is the guilty until proven innocent. And I can see it happening; where I park for Flames games there are often hookers hanging around. I sometimes say hello to them as I walk by; partly to be polite, partly because I don't want them to think I am a jerk or snob and have them do something to my car. Now all of a sudden I could have a over zeleous cop take away my car all because I stopped to say hello to the pretty lady who is dressed all slutty.

Just wondering how this affects everything...
CANADA'S LEGAL AGE OF CONSENT
TO SEXUAL ACTIVITY Prepared by:
Marilyn Pilon
Law and Government Division
25 January 1999
Revised 12 April 2001
The Criminal Code does not now criminalize consensual sexual activity with or between persons 14 or over, unless it takes place in a relationship of trust or dependency, in which case sexual activity with persons over 14 but under 18 can constitute an offence, notwithstanding their consent. Even consensual activity with those under 14 but over 12 may not be an offence if the accused is under 16 and less than two years older than the complainant. The exception, of course, is anal intercourse, to which unmarried persons under 18 cannot legally consent, although both the Ontario Court of Appeal(3) and the Quebec Court of Appeal(4) have struck down the relevant section of the Criminal Code.
http://www.parl.gc.ca/information/li...s/prb993-e.htm
And this off of the Department of Justice website..
What is Canada’s age of consent?
The age of consent is 18 years where the sexual activity involves exploitative activity, such as prostitution, pornography or where there is a relationship of trust, authority or dependency. For other sexual activity, the age of consent is 14 years.
The last sentence in combination with the first part seems ridiculous.

The left strikes again calling a province where people think selling your body/soul for money is wrong stupid.
Where is Lan or Iowa to jump on this bandwagon.
Heck, let us just legalize cocaine, heroine, weed, prostitution, theft, vandalism, and while we are at it lets all get together and sing kumbaya for single mothers and people infected with aids because its not their fault, its societies.
Grow up and take responsibility for your own actions - if you want to move to Europe, go ahead, I will even donate 5$ for your plane ticket. If you cant follow the laws in a country then leave, dont bitch and say that we should all conform to a French/Dutch/Thailand morales cause they have it right.
Geesh - why do I even read posts in the off topic section started by Iowa, Lan, or Feta.

I'm curious as to where the money goes after the cars are auctioned off. The papers today were saying it went in to general revenue and a portion might possibly go towards victims assistance groups or something. I hope upon hope that the money can be directed to something beneficial and related to the cause this new law is meant to fight. Simply going into general revenue is kind of pointless and opens the potential for increased funding for police divisions that seize a lot of cars. I would hate for this to become another way for the police to obtain funding much like other traffic tickets are often treated as cash grabs...

Does anybody else see the irony in what MYK said here? Here's a discussion about how some people didn't like the current law and changed it, and those of us opposed the the new law are the ones told that if we don't like the laws then we should leave.

It's not as black and white as that. There are many elements that need to be proven, that is why there are hardly any charges laid under this section with regards to prostitution.

I'm not so sure its as simple as this. Doesn't the Charter of Rights and Freedoms protect your right to own property? The police can't just violate your chartered rights...

This is not the only law that seizes property. If you are caught driving with a suspended licence. BOOM your car is seized for 30 days. You get caught importing illegal goods. BOOM car is seized.
The persons vehicle will not be sold until after the person is found guilty.

Not to mention fishing or hunting without a licence.
