Default Kulak Down, Wotherspoon Up

For Immediate Release
Thursday, December 8, 2016
Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today that they have recalled defenceman Tyler Wotherspoon from their AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat. The Flames also announced that they have assigned defenceman Brett Kulak to the Heat.

Wotherspoon, Calgary’s second round pick (57th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, has played 19 games for Stockton this season and recorded six points (1G, 5A). The 23-year-old has played 26 games for the Flames over the last three seasons and has five assists. Wotherspoon also played in six playoff games for Calgary in 2014-15.

Cool cool cool. I'm sure this was done to get Kulak back on some ice.

Hopefully Wotherspoon draws into a game or two, would be interesting to see him at the NHL level again.

This has to be to give Kulak some minutes. He has been the #7 for a while now, and he would benefit more from playing in AHL than bench warming

Wonder if Wotherspoon will even bother packing his skates

Yeah, smart move as Kulak was not getting into the line-up with the way the D has been playing. I've said it before, but Wideman looks to be playing really smart and knowing his limitations. Yes, he will get burned from time to time on a pinch as he does not have the speed to get back, but 90% of the time or more, his pinches are smart. He is playing angles well to make up for his foot speed as well. Jokipakka has also been playing really well, you rarely even notice him, which is a good thing when you are this type of d-man. Engelland gets crapped on a lot here, but he has been, in my opinion, the most consistent defenseman this year.

Get Kulak some ice and he'll be back up when there is an injury or in a week or two.

No need to put Wotherspoon in unless there is a loss or two or an injury.

I like what we have in Kulak and getting him some playing minutes will be huge for him to builkd off of his NHL experience. Wotherspoon we really don't know too much about him, the clock is ticking for him he needs to step up and show he can stick at this level. He will get his opportunities with a new coaching staff and I hope he takes full advantage of it.

I think both guys can be bottom pairing guys. I just don't like the idea of Wotherspoon and Engellend together. Too much of the same skill set.

I know Wideman has been playing better, but the simple fact of the matter is that the majority of the goals being scored on the Flames these days are happening when Wideman and Brodie are on the ice.

I know some people will argue that that is entirely on Brodie but I disagree. Defensemen play better with certain partners than they do with others, and in certain conditions over other conditions.

Giordano - Hamilton is rocking
Jokipakka - Engelland is going well.

I would like to see Brodie back on the right side, with a stable partner like Wotherspoon.

What could it hurt? It isn't like Brodie-Wideman is setting the arena on fire.

And the Flames need to start planning/preparing for Wideman's absence.

Maybe press box chemistry but I doubt this affects team chemistry.

But Kulak was the Keystone!! He pushed Jokipakka and Wideman to be better!!!

All kidding aside, good to see Kulak heading down to get some icetime and maybe Wotherspoon can get in a game and impress.

Crappy for Kulak - goes from earning ~$3,600/day in the NHL to ~$380/day in the A. But at least he gets some game minutes.

But Wideman is playing well and the team is above .500 for the first time this season. Is it really the best time to shuffle out Wideman and move Brodie to the other side to experiment with Wotherspoon to see if it'll get him to play better? I think some measure of consistency will do Brodie good, and that it isn't really the best idea to sit Wideman just because it might make Brodie play better.

Watching Brodie lately, I think his poorer play has little or nothing to do with his defense partner. Side of the ice, maybe, but I do think he's a very good player and is capable of making that adjustment eventually.

I do also doubt it would affect the team chemistry but I wouldn't be so fast to judge whether or not based off him always being in the press box. Not sure if you ever played sports but team chemistry actually starts off the ice. I'm also not sure how he has gelled with the guys but having a guy the whole team loves regardless of his game impact could mess up team chemistry.

Yeah but it's a reality for every single team that press box players will be sent back and forth between the NHL and AHL. I'm sure Kulak is a good dude but I don't think his absence will affect how Gio, Gaudreau, Monahan, etc play.

Have you informed Rachel Notley?!? She'll ride in swiftly to rectify this gruesome injustice!

Seriously though, where is that even legal in Canada?
