Expected for the first day back, probably a ton of people using the 15$ credit between friends as well.

I was actually shocked to see a few cars in Deep SW Somerset area available at 7:15 this morning.

When people are talking about seeing cars, do they mean the ones you see moving around on the app? Because I could have sworn that those actually don't represent the cars out there in any way, it's just a visual thing for your brain.

They try to have them show the actual cars (in real-time), but sometimes they remove some cars to avoid cluttering the screen.

Does anyone know if there will be an Uber area at YYC for pickup/dropoff? I'll be flying in a couple weeks and would like to use Uber even though cabs are usually right out front. It would be nice if they made a section for Uber drivers to easily pickup/dropoff passengers there

I'd highly doubt it. Associated pays big money for that, and it is an exclusive deal. You may be able to get stealth pickups, but I wouldn't expect an official area.

Drop off should not be an issue, it's just like anyone else dropping someone off at the main doors. But yeah, picking up will be an issue due to the reasons Fuzz has mentioned.

Pickup will be fine for Uber. I regularily use Checker for pickups at the airport. The exclusive deal Associated has is for the waiting areas; you can call/app request a pickup from Checker Cab or Uber just the same.

Used it last night to send a friend home. Typical cab cost is usually $30 + tip. This ride was $21 all in and she said the guy was polite and the car was clean.

Glad they are back.

If they don't make something official, Uber cars are just going to haphazardly clog up the pick up areas, and then they'll have to pay someone just to patrol it and chase them away every 5 minutes.

All the major airports in the US have dedicated areas with signage for rideshare pickup, Calgary would be stupid to not do this.

Are the number of Uber drivers in Calgary low because of the tougher requirements? I think you need a new license plate (L-12345) and a different class of license to be one.

How does tipping work? You just tip the driver cash? Or can it be added to your credit card?

I assume you'd hang out in the cell phone waiting area and that will fill up with Ubers. Will be very difficult to police with unmarked cars

The polite thing to do is let her stay over or drive her home.

The Uber app does not include a tip when billing you for a trip fare.

In most cities, Uber is a cashless experience. Tipping is voluntary. As a rider, you are not obligated to offer your driver a gratuity in cash.

If you decide you would like to tip, your driver is welcome to accept.

Yeah, when I've checked, sometimes there are a few cars nearby and other times, nothing. One of my co-workers tried to get one last night and finally gave up and got a taxi. Hopefully this is just because things are starting up and it will improve. If you can't get one any more reliably than a taxi, it will be a big fail in my books. I don't care about price, I care about availability.

I tried it out finally in LA and always had a car within 5 minutes. It doesn't need to be that fast here, but it does need to be there when you want one.

And the weather sucks so a lot are probably going to wait until it warms up before they actually start and get everything in order.

Just opened the app to check, and it's the same here. I think this go around will take a lot more time. Drivers can't just sign up on a boring night and go make money. In a way, it's probably better. Not just because of the obvious license, insurance and background check thing, but because it wont be a total free-for-all, and it will attract people that are willing to do it consistently, and semi-professionally. The perfect part time job for people with imperfect schedules. There are so many things that can get in the way of a part time job (shared custody, sports leagues, varying levels of commitment), it really is a thing that people that want to make money when they feel like it, can do.

I'm a-ok with this process people have to go through to do this. It's not much more than the effort you would put in getting any after hours job. You don't just click an app and sign up to work at a place. This system of filtration will be better for the public, and better for drivers. I bet that most of the immediate sign ups will be cab drivers that don't own plates.
