For me, I saw Shink as a grittier player than Granlund in that he went to dirtier areas of the ice. Granlund seemed like more of a perimeter player to me with a wicked shot. I legitimately think that Shinkaruk would be playing on the Canucks roster right now had he not been traded, that roster is just bad. The flames are a deep team and should allow us to let our players ripen properly. Whether he turns into Cammallerri or Kolanos remains to be seen

There were some around here writing Klimchuk off before this season, too. Give it time in the minors and maybe he'll emerge as an NHLer in some capacity.

It seems to me, he looked better at the end of last season IIRC.
I do look forward to seeing what Klimchuk can bring when he gets his chance.

I was encouraged by Shinkaruk's performance in garbage time at the end of last year, but now we're seeing that perhaps he can only look good during garbage time, and not when the games mean anything.

Still, I think he could be a player if he works on a few things. He's got enough skill to be an NHLer, but he needs to improve on work ethic, skating, and defensive acumen. Time in the AHL will do him good. He may not pan out for another year or two, which is what you should probably expect of a late 1st rounder.

If nothing else, his exposure during a period where the Flames were turning things around and learning how to play the game at a high level will do him good for his development. I'll be curious to see how he implements what he's learned in his next few games in the AHL.

I don't think he's got the game to overcome his lack of size in the NHL. That said he still has time to change that. Granlund would have been lost on waivers anyway so I look at it as getting something for nothing.

To be fair, Shinkaruk is just as good of an AHL player as Klimchuk, so the jury's still out on both of them.

Agreed. The one caveat is that Klimchuk has a bit more jam and intangibles to his game that may enable him to play bottom 6 in the NHL. Shinkaruk is top 6 or nothing.

I didn't see anything special during his stint with the flames to ever think he could be a regular top 6 forward in the NHL. Yes he is still young but he was invisible most nights. Glad he got sent back.

I read the thread title and for a second thought they had sent Shinkaruk to Stockholm

Nicklas Grossmann forgot some stuff in the locker room, so Shinkaruk needs to get it back to him?

Since getting traded to the Canucks Granlund has put up 12 points in 36 games and is -15 (more teams fault then his but still). Shinkaruk hasn't done much in the NHL but at least we can still try and develop him in the AHL whereas Canucks don't have the depth and need Granlund in the NHL. Worst case scenario Canucks "win" this trade as Granlund remains a serviceable role player and Shinkaruk is a career AHLer, but it's such a small win that it means absolutely nothing to the makeup or overall success of the team, and as such I like Granlund and hope he has a decent career in Vancouver or wherever. Not like he'll be the difference maker in Canucks v Flames going forward.

Hunter "gold skates" Shinkaruk look wholly uninspiring.

From the Flames perspective I think the trade was more about waiver eligibility, they can send Shinkaruk to the farm but Granlund would have had to clear waivers.
