I'm with you. I go out, turn the car on, turn the heaters to full, turn the rear defrost on. Grab the brush and clean off all the snow then jump in the car and head off. That seems like plenty of 'warm up' time, and I'm right there, so no one but me is jumping into the car and driving off.

Hit the auto start, wait 2 minutes, go outside, brush juuuust enough snow to see outside, preferably leaving it on the vehicle. Exit driveway, park and clean the car on the street. Because no way am I moving snow twice. Fortunately I have a good spot to do this, but I realize not everyone can.

High idle switch ftw. My truck idles for about 6 hours a day, usually more. Lots of equipment and whatnot being powered by it.

Just for warmups though, I give it a minute or two then go, keeping it under 2500 rpms until it comes to temp. My diesel though doesn't have supplemental grid heaters for the defrost and takes a long time to blow warm air, so if it's really cold, like -20 or worse, I can't see unless it's at least halfway to operating temperature, just fogs up. It's plugged in at that point though so still doesn't take that long, 5-10 minutes.

Probs not the right thread to put it in, but a warning to those who plan on drinking and driving tomorrow night. Alberta is putting a city wide blitz check stop starting Saturday and into Sunday morning.

Lol. You need a remote start! I have a detached (insulated) garage, but I guarantee that heating it to 3 degrees to offset my 10 minutes of warm up, would cost me more. Maybe if I could drive in and out of it without opening a 7x16' door and letting all the heat out, it'd be a different story. Doesn't really matter, though. I'm happy with my system. In case you haven't noticed, I hate strugglers. Especailly the ones that are shivering in their cars, not making turns, because their breath is fogging up the side window. Pretty silly and dangerous way to save fifty cents.

I have a neighbor a few doors down across the alley who has a diesel cube van and for the last week or two he has let that thing idle for an hour or so in the morning. One morning it sat at idle for three hours or more. I dropped my kid off at school at 8, went shopping and came home at 10:30 and the truck was still sitting there. I figure the guy must have laid down and fell asleep.

I just don't get it, it's such an old school mentality but you haven't needed to idle diesels like that for a long, long time. I've had several over the years. Sure diesels take longer to warm up, but idling them is worse than gas engines, they don't burn all their fuel at idle. Which can wet stack the cylinders.

People say "Well they need to idle for a while before being driven so they can warm up" and that is very true, but only to a point. A diesel does not combust well cold, same issue as I said above, but even worse since if driven cold since it's being revved high. Even though its not burning fuel very well at idle either, driving cold has worse fuel burn efficiency. While driving drastically reduces heating time, it also drastically introduces soot to the particulate filter. (Which is very expensive when it clogs) but that will continue to happen if idled more than it needs to be.

So it's all about balance. Does the truck need to idle for half an hour? Hell no. Even if it's -30, 5-10 minutes is plenty.

The only other time a diesel needs to idle is after being driven hard. Say, towing a trailer. If you just shut it off right after stopping the coolant and oil stops flowing, which are both used to cool engine parts, like the turbo. If that stops flowing then something like the turbo isn't getting cooled, all that heat is soaking. So in this scenario it needs to idle a bit before being turned off. But again, we're talking a few minutes, not the 45 minutes like some idiots.

People just still have that old school diesel mentality. Back in the day, yeah, they needed to idle. The last 20 years? Not so much. do they need to idle more than a gas engine? Yes. But not much more. Minutes, not hours.

These are the same guys that complain about emissions control systems failing, and costing them money, so they're taking them out instead. Of course your DPF clogged you meathead, you treat your truck like ####
