I believe the solution is to tell them to call it in and have their dispatcher take the payment over the phone. Somehow, that tends to miraculously fix their broken machine.

the better solution is to thank them for the free ride and get out. The machine gets 'fixed' (plugged in) pretty quickly at that point.

One thing to keep in mind about these apps is that as part of the TNC by-law, the city allowed taxi companies to utilize surge pricing on trips booked through an app. Only street hails and calls to a dispatch centre are mandated at the regulated rate.

do they have to warn you first? If I remember right, Uber had a few warning popups to make sure you wanted a ride at surge prices.
