I wouldn't write him off based on the vote without knowing his reasons, I've found him to be one of the best of the new crop of Councillor's that have come onto the scene lately, I'm very impressed with his advocacy for the new green line LRT. Perhaps contact his office and find out why he voted the way he did?

Yeah I really liked him for the green line LRT as well, I did send out a tweet asking him why he voted that way. Maybe I'll hear back? I'm just super disappointed about the Uber vote because I really think Calgary needs it.

So the city takes 20% of the Uber fare?
Why would they get that?

New fee structure includes per-trip fee
The new rules adopted Monday give TNCs a choice to use the old fee structure or a new one which charges an annual TNC fee of $5,000 to $20,000 depending on the size of the company's driver roster, plus a $15 per-driver fee and a 20-cent per-trip fee.
The TNC fee scale works as follows:
1 to 100 drivers: $5,000
101 to 500 drivers: $10,000
501 to 1,000 drivers: $15,000
1,001 drivers or more: $20,000
The new fee structure was approved as a one-year pilot project with council to review the changes in 2017.

I would suspect with this pricing there will be little to no cost savings with Uber.
EDIT: Ha I see its 20 cent, not 20%. I can't read on a monday afternoon.

It could cost twice as much for all I care (and with surge pricing, it might), just knowing that I can get a ride when I want one, is the victory. The me that trudged home from the bar in minus 20 up the 14th street hill in dress shoes would have paid $50 for a $10 cab ride.
Taxi companies in this city can suuuuuuck it. As soon as Uber is back, they will always be my first attempt for a ride. Just like Elaine returning the dress because of spite. 20 years of F me? Well, F you.

If you see a guy giving the double bird to a taxi as he gets into an Uber, you've just found 4x4.

Nice to hear Calgary is entering the modern world and the next time I'm in town I won't be forced to walk up and down 9th ave trying to hail a taxi.
I recently tried an Uber home from the airport for the first time. It was a bit of a walk to the pick up area but ended up being half the wait time and 30% cheaper than a taxi.

He updated his website with the reasons why he voted no.
http://www.shanekeating.ca/2016/11/28/tncs/
He supports TNCs but saw the changes as a benefit to UBER specifically and has infrequent drivers being subsidized by more full-time drivers. In short, he had an issue with tailoring bylaws for one specific company.

Honestly, I dont even need Uber, as I've said repeatedly, the threat of Uber alone has improved Cab service in this city immeasurably.

Yeah, this is almost anti-climactic, as I've found taxi service in this city has improved dramatically in the last year or two.

It shouldnt have had to go down this way, and thats 100% on the cab companies, but even so, all we're concerned about is the service itself.

Improved, sure, but it's too little, too late. I'm not as hard-line as 4x4 but I can't see using cabs anymore.

I agree that taxi service has improved in the last year, but before I give any credit to cab companies, I will assume that there are simply less people going out and blowing money. Yes, the hate runs deep.

Uber will, more than anything, improve Friday, Saturday night peak and holidays.

Not sure I believe the threat of uber coming back, has improved service. Granted, the sample size is small, but I took a cab several of times the past couple weeks and cabbies were still being dicks about short trips or long haul trips if they weren't going that direction.
