It feels weird that they're even announcing the "new gay character". It seems much more Star Trek to just have the gay character and not make it a thing.

Is the character gay, or the actor? Or both?
Even so, having a gay character trapped on a starship which is gone for long periods of time seems cruel and an inter-galactic felony waiting to happen.
I mean, he doesnt have the same breadth of options as everyone else. Thats gotta suck.

Star Trek: Discovery is starting to fill its decks.
CBS Access is now confirming Michelle Yeoh will join the show, which has also cast two more actors to star in the eagerly anticipated series. One of the new characters will be the decades-old franchise’s first to be originally conceived and announced as gay.
First up: Actor Doug Jones (Hellboy, Falling Skies) will play Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species to the Star Trek universe.
Second, Anthony Rapp (Rent, Road Trip) will star as Lt. Stamets, an “astromycologist,” fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery. Lt. Stamets is the new gay character
Wow they've officially casted a gay character based on Egon:
Not exactly related to the new series but Hollywood Reporter has a long article in interview form with cast and crew about First Contact. Interesting read.
