Awesome games by Stajan, Johnson, Brodie, and Bennett. Usual great stuff from Tkachuk, Frolik, Backlund. Ferland and Hamilton honourable mention.

That was fun. I love watching the Flames in the middle of the night as long as the effort is there, and it was certainly there yesterday. Thought the first period was excellent, they probably should have scored a second goal there which would have made things a bit easier. Bruins pushed hard later, but the Flames hung in well. Loved that they stood up for each other, and the fact that they almost immediately restored their lead after conceding that tying goal is a good sign IMO. As for individual players -
- Bennett is a winger for me. He seems more confident than at center and is effective along the boards. Awesome game, his mix of skill and grit is a thing of beauty.
- Tkachuk is going to be a fan favorite for a long long time. Works hard every shift, generates chances and is an absolute #######. I love him.
- Backlund and Frolik are the teams best forwards right now. Intelligent and reliable in all zones and situations, but that's nothing new.
- Brouwer had an off-game, I thought. Hopefully just a blip.
- Monahan had a good all-around game IMO. Needs to step up offensively though.
- Stajan has quietly put together a great season so far. Long may it continue.
- Ferland is a beast when he's on. Looks like he's finally found consistency in his game which is a great thing.
- Hathaway is everything I want Bouma to be. Grit, energy, no nonsense. Just a solid bottom six player, hopefully he's won a full-time job on the 4th line.
- Chiasson gets a lot of flak around here, but you can't fault the effort. Shouldn't be a 14 minute guy, but scored an important goal obviously.
- Shinkaruk and Hamilton were quiet. Wouldn't mind Shinkaruk back in the AHL at this point.
- Really missed Versteegs creativity.
- Brodie had his best game of the season IMO. More of that please.
- Giordano, Engelland and Hamilton were solid. Really wanted Dougie to score and silence those boos.
- Wideman took a brainless boarding penalty in the third, but other than that, I thought he was okay. Shouldn't be a 22 minute guy.
- Kulak will probably be back in the press box soon. Wasn't too impressed with him.
- Johnson is everything I wanted Elliott to be. Amazing what difference a great goaltender can make.

Missed the game, was it a solid defensive game or did Johnson bail us out?

I've been vocally disappointed in brodie all year.
That was a hell of a game by him last night. He was a major disruption to the bruins offense and pp all night.
Hope he keeps it up, as he can be an elite player when he plays like he did last night.

Great summery! Only thing I disagree with is the boarding. Backes is impossible to move from the front of the net or steal the puck from in a board battle. All of a sudden the beast that is Wideman suddenly levels him? Nope... Backes sold that one.

I wouldn't say he was the only reason they won but he made two or three big saves at key times. He didn't give up a lot of bad rebounds either. The goal against him wasn't on him either. Just a really solid game from Johnson.
I also like that they didn't fold after Boston tied the game. They went and got it back right away.

Probably has been mentioned already, but the play Brodie made in the defensive zone to start the puck up the ice that ended up being Bennett's goal was otherworldly.

It's been said before but the team truly does play differently in front of Johnson because they have complete confidence in him. How could you not with how calm and deliberate every one of his movements are.
Instead of collapsing in front of Elliott, they put pressure on the opposition and force turnovers which is what the system is supposed to be about. Hopefully once they build more confidence as a team Elliott can be eased into a 1B role, but I hope GG stops trying to force it.

Brodie is just so nonchalant about stripping elite players of the puck mere moments before a scoring chance. Would love to see a compilation video with a "yoink" sound every time he does it.

They definitely are playing a lot better defensively since Johnny got hurt. Hopefully this is a lemonade out of lemons thing, they lock down their defensive game and when Johnny comes back they have a little more punch offensively. They have looked good as of late, easily could have won every game except the Buffalo one.

Agreed, but I think that's hugely positive news. Like the Titanic heading towards an ice burg you put the breaks on but the boat still goes forward until the destructive motion gets corrected and you can actually stop drifting towards your doom.
Maybe he's ready to turn back towards being a factor again.

Generally anything Don Cherry says is a lot of hot air, but last week he was talking about the offensive player has to take some responsibility along the boards. Playing 3 feet out from the boards with the defense right at your back is a recipe for injury. Yes the defensive player shouldn't try to level the guy but you also can't expect them not to have any contact with you just because your close to the boards. If you're keep your body right up against the boards there is way less potential for injury. And I agree, Backes definitely embellished a bit there.

Chiasson really isn't as bad as the haters say. He shouldn't be getting top line minutes and probably shouldn't be on the powerplay, but he's a decent bottom six winger. I find he is really calm with the puck, doesn't rush or throw it away too often, and will hold onto it a bit longer to make sure he makes the safe play. Even the goal he scored, he took his time, and made sure he got a good shot off. Most Flames would have just rushed the shot and put it wide.
I really don't understand the usage of Shinkaruk. He is not suited to a bottom six role. If you aren't going to play him on a scoring line or on the powerplay, you are just wasting him. Seems like Gulutzan is setting him up to fail. Send him down to the AHL if you are going to mismanage him. You play him as a top six scoring winger and on the powerplay in the AHL, he performs well in this role, and then you call him up and stick him on a checking line with zero powerplay time. Illogical. Like I said before, you might as well call Kylington up and play him as a crash and bang winger.
