They were bad last year but they aren't the catastrophe that they are right now.

For example, the lowest historical PP% is shared by the 98 Lightning and 01 Wild at 9.3% source
The Flames are currently 8.4% Obviously a small sample size still with a little less than 3/4th's of the season to go, but the Flames have never finished the season below 12.1% . Even last year's PP was a mediocre 17%.

You are correct in that the PK last year wasn't very good as it's not much different than it is now. 72.2% so far this season versus 75.5% last season, both lowest in franchise history.

Some shallow stats but I think this just continues to highlight how much of a black hole special team, powerplay especially has been for this team thus far this season. We can say "if we had league average", we'd be in a different place and that'd probably be true.
Problem is, this team doesn't even know how to be below league average with the man advantage.

It's not the end of the season yet. We can still improve.

I really hope the powerplay does improve (almost impossible to get any worse), but with Dave Cameron running it I doubt they get close to even the mediocre 17% of last season.

That 17% should have an asterisk beside it too. The power play was terrible for the first half of the season and really only starting to improve after they were already out of the running

It only really started improving when Wideman was replaced with Hamilton.

Are there any stats on number of shots blocked on the PP? I've noticed this year the team is a lot slower in getting shots off from the point on the PP which is a clear change from last year, which I'm assuming is a direct ask from the assistant to forego a point shot unless there is a lane. I wonder if the stats showed that the Flames were getting a lot of point shots blocked last year.

I don't want someone ahead of their time. I want someone ahead in their time. And the fact that the Flames are one of the worst teams in the league is more telling than any praise Torts can provide.

Until I hear the same praise from Mike Babcock, Joel Quenneville, or Daryl Sutter, I couldn't care. Torts is one more bad season away from being an old memory in this league. It's like Treliving getting praise from Mike Millbury
It's more like Treliving getting praise from Jim Benning, since he's also one more bad season away from being an old memory in this league.
