I hear this talked about a lot but how many players are actually reliable top players in their late 30's?

Seems like these front-loaded big contracts typically get shipped off to a team that needs to reach the cap floor as they near the end.

Pronger > ARI
Datsyuk > ARI
Savard > NJD
Horton > TOR

Hahaha

1) Sign high end pending UFA to ridiculous contract to age of 40. Remember to put in lots of bonuses to reduce dollars paid at end of term
2) Trade him to bottom feeder or budget team when player is 36+
3) ???????
4) Profit!!!!!!

It's a lot, but they had to do it. No problems with this contract.

It's so funny reading some of these comments..

You don't think his age was taken into consideration? Same thing with Gio.

The Burns deal is structured to protect the club near the end of the deal.

I know many of you like to act like you could have made a better deal happen, but most of you barely know how to communicate on a web page let alone negotiate a multi-year multi-million dollar deal.

I'm not calling anyone out, but let's keep in mind that these people making these deals know a hell of a lot more than us.

30 other teams would have given Burns that deal. You take a few bad years to get the next 4-6 years. He's a top 10 Dman in the world.

I think if you look at the best point per game producers among defensemen over the past half a decade, Gio and Burns are very comparable. Gio also never played as a forward.

Both guys are getting term because of it, but Gio took the home town discount

I mean seriously, what were the Sharks going to do? Let him walk?

They get one of the best defenseman in the world next 3 - 5 years, and then have to swallow the last few years.

No brainer deal for both sides.

No... the posts about how bad of a deal that was made and acting as though we, the general public know better, is what's condescending.

I don't know if its a good deal. What I do know is there would be teams lining up to sign him to it.

Burns is awesome. I love Gio, but I would take Burnsy all day, every day.

He's not a great overall defender so my concern is that once the offense slips what will his role be?

I hope the deal includes some type of clause so that he does not look like a guy from duck dynasty

In what way is that a great deal to move him?

5M for a 40 year old isn't exactly the most enticing contract.

If his offense slips he'll only be elite instead of miles ahead of everybody. He's the closest thing to Ovechkin that anyone else in the league has imo.

I think this contract is fair value for both team and player.

He's had a nice couple of seasons now but I don't think he's miles ahead of anybody. He has a nice veteran forward group to work with so he gets plenty of opportunity in the opponents end of the ice. Great player for the fans and a really good offensive defenseman for sure but he has trouble in his own end at times.

Wow that's a big contract.
I think I've heard owners are going to be trying to negotiate lower max terms in the next CBA

Yeah right. No way the NHLPA lets that happen. They're the ones paying it. Just stop paying it if you think it's ludicrous. It is ludicrous.

Since 2009-2010, here are the defencemen who have put up 30 or more points in a season at age 36 or older:

Lidstrom
Streit
Markov
Niedermayer
Rafalski
Timmonen
Zidlicky
Chara
Gonchar
Boyle
Hamrlik
Campbell
Blake

13 guys. 8 guys put up more than 40 points at 36+. So in the NHL over the last 5 years we are averaging about 2-3 guys age 36 hitting 30 points, and 1.5 guys hitting 40 points.

Here's a list of top scoring D-men from last season that will be 36+ in the next 4-5 seasons:

Burns
Giordano
Byfuglien
Suter
Weber
Seabrook
Yandle
Keith
Goligoski
Green

Which of these guys do you think will still be hitting 30+ points in 4-5 years. Odds are it's only going to be 2-3 of them. The Burns contract carries ALOT of risk.
