Canadian special forces soldiers in Iraq have occasionally opened fire without warning on Islamic State extremists in order to protect civilians and their Kurdish allies, military officials say.

They have also been deeply and routinely involved in evacuating casualties from the front in the months leading up to the offensive to liberate the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

Good, our soldiers are good at killing people and they should be employing their skills.

They've not even committed to buy 18, they are just going to start negotiations with Boeing to potentially buy 18 as a stop gap. Then they will start with a open procurement process for a full fleet replacement.

They were saying in the conference ther eis a huge gap currently. Can not currently commit to NATO and NORAD taskings simultaneously. This would help with that while they figure out what to buy (again).

I have no problem buying it as a stop-gap solution, but not if it means they will just push off buying the F-35 for way longer than they should.

This will push off the needed replacement of the fleet forever.

Instead we've bought a stop gap measure that will eventually run massively over cost if the Kuwaiti deal is to be believed and the stop gap is to buy planes on the downswing to being obsolete.

If they had announced that they were buying these and opening the procurement and replacement cycle at the start of the year I'd feel a lot better about it.

No its not, the design and approval cycle for a military jet is a lot different then building civilian planes. Bombardier doesn't have the expertise, manufacturing lines or experience in building a modern jet fighter.

You don't start building jet fighters for a contract of 65 fighters, and the competition internationally for military jets is effectively closed.

People need to give up this idea that Canada can enter into the military jet market these aren't armored vehicles that we're talking about it.

On top of that I wouldn't trust Bombardier to build bikes on time and on budget let alone a multi role fighter.

Oh, you're just being negative.

Any idiot can just weld some AK-47s onto the wings of an Airbus.

Run some cables through pulleys to the pilots so they can pull the triggers and boom! Job done!

Fear us!

With the Liberal's deep pockets Bombadier can make anything happen. They just need a little bit of positive support and a blank cheque.

I see your Iltis and raise you:

In snow and mud the vehicle had to be backed up hills, otherwise it would get no traction.
