You could also try XROST. You use your VISA to purchase and XROST card (which can be used at a bunch of different merchants) and use that card at allofmp3.

Anybody had any experience with Yahoo! Music? Unlimited listening for a monthly fee? I was going to try it but I don't think I can transfer songs onto my Treo650.

I'd much rather buy a CD. In my view I then own the product, have given the Recording Ass. their cut and the artists the meager amount they get and can do whatever the hell I want with it. They shouldn't be allowed to restrict me from ripping it for my own use. In Canada so far they haven't limited this, and it's fair game. Plus, I get to rip the tracks at a quality I choose. I loath itunes and any of the other tethered/DRMed to death music sites.
If I could buy direct from the artists I'd much rather do that.

You would think that some of these artists would be doing this. Some are so huge I'm sure they could afford and have the fan following to do it. Especially with the internet.

I think we'll see artists doing this through the new myspace deal pretty quickly. They are setting it up so any artist can sell their music in mp3 form for whatever price they'd like.

It's legal to download music off peer-to-peer programs in Canada. The Canadian Copyright Association levied a $25 fee on all MP3 players that sees the $$ go to recording artists and such to compensate for the ruling.
You just can't upload...

Perhaps not your type of music, but check out the Barenaked Ladies website. They have set up their own label (under Nettwerk Music Group) and sell downloads (including lossless) (and no DRM), CDs, USB Drives with their album, and live shows. An interesting approach. Here is a link to an article on it.
I like some of there stuff, don't care for others, but they have my utmost respect for how they are attempting to change the music business for the better in Canada.
Jane Siberry's website, Sheeba.ca, has a bunch of her music for sale, and you are allowed to pay whatever you want for it. You can download it for free, and if you like it go back and pay what you feel it was worth. Her on stipulation is if you pay, please cover the cost the Credit Card charges.
Both very interesting ways Canadian artists are trying to take advantage of internet distribution.

Thanks for that, and those are both up my alley. Interesting Nettwerk is into that because early on in this whole mess I recall seeing an interview with one of their execs and he was very pro RIAA. I was disappointed because nettwerk is a great label which lots of great artists. This is going back to the Metallica whining days though so lots has changed since then.

Nettwerk is actually paying the legal fees of one of the people sued by the RIAA. link

It appears allofmp3.com is pretty well toast. You can no longer use XROST to purchase songs on that site. They only take credit card payments, and their credit card payment gateway has been dead for a couple of weeks. RIP allofmp3.com!

Whoa, I hadn't seen that anywhere yet. Was there any sort of a statement from XROST?

Wow, pretty interesting for a band of their stature to take this approach. I think the major labels are really in trouble. I spoke with someone at Universal music once just talking generally about working in the industry...the outlook was not good. But I think a lot of it is their own fault. Its not like they are even supporting quality these days, its all about the quick cash grab. I hope more bands start to take the BNL approach.
