How about this: there is no such thing as a "rolling carry-on bag". If you can't carry your carry-on bag, it's not a carry-on bag.

Those are the most space efficient, as they are designed to fit perfectly into the overhead bins.
The over stuffed backpacks, duffels and monster purses that people have to turn sideways to fit kill a lot of space in the bins that would have been filled by the rolling style.

There is rolling luggage that meets the size requirements. The airlines just need to actually enforce it and stop caring about people getting hurt feeling because they are too cheap to pay for checked bags or a dare that includes checked bags. Flying isn't some protected right in Canada and the rules should be enforced.

They are designed from a width perspective to fit in the bin, but they also have to be turned sideways to be able to close the bin, and 3 of them take up an entire overhead space designed to accommodate 9-12 people.

Damn straight it does, especially in matters of aviation.
Plus when you roll into an airport or aircraft cabin with a Rimowa people just let you do whatever you want. They know they are standing in the presence of the aura of the golden age of flight, they'll even let you smoke on board if you wish.

Didn't Ryanair toy with the idea of the standing section a few years back? It never actually happened but I do recall articles in the aviation industry about it.
I'm going to chime in on this. First of all I don't fly often, a once or twice a year type person. This last October I went on a quick 3 week backpacking trip that included lots of flying on several different airlines. I had only one bag, my 40l osprey bag that is carry on compliant. It fits in all the preflight check bins but it does seem rather big.
The only reason I took it into the cabin is because the cost to check luggage now would of cost me hundreds of dollars over my trip. A couple times I had to put my bag under the seat because the overhead bins were full.
To me if the airlines just introduced the checked luggage fee to raise revenue, they basically made the whole flying experience a gong show. We all have luggage and I assume lots of people like me try carry on if we can. Why not just charge everybody by the weight of their luggage. Once you pay for your weight you decide where to put it. I would of just checked my backpack and overhead bin problem would be solved. To me it just seems like a horrible use of space on a space to have the cabin packed with luggage while the baggage compartment must have an excess of space. Just thinking out loud here.

Airlines have tight margins. I can see how this is necessary to make their basest flights look cheaper to get more customers. I also agree with a model where those who use more pay more.
I appreciate the challenges in operating an airline, but their margins are nowhere near as tight as they were a few years ago thanks to low jet fuel prices. The taxes and surcharges added to tickets has not come off. United made nearly $1 billion in net income last quarter. Because of the reduction in the number of carriers in the US, many flight segments have no real competition.

I love how "random" was pretty much exactly as good as any other method. Honestly though, the Window, Middle, Aisle method seems like the best option for both sides - airline loads faster, people still think the airline is doing something by actually having a system (instead of just random).
