Minnesota is at Calgary Dec 2, retribution will be on the Flames mind.
Early Tanking

Was something said to the players about tanking this season to shoot for a number one? Smith looks elite! Everyone else though, looks sluggish and terrible. If we can't beat the flames I really don't know about our season. Still a diehard. Will watch every game. Just a head scratcher.
Quote:
When I made the GDT for the mainboard today I noticed that the Coyotes/Flames combined point total is only 1 more than the Penguins.
Intriguing matchup this one is.
Quote:
I was excited to be able to watch the group of young future star coyotes tonight...and Dvorak, Strome and Chychrun are all scratches. WTF
Do you even lift, bro?

Playing hockey is not condusive to building strength. Too many carido heavy games and not enough weightlifting. Players tend to end the season with less muscle mass than they started.
Coaching Issues Too!
Quote:
t's almost as if Tippett is testing ownership to see if they have any balls at all. Sign the extension, make yourself VP of hockey ops, then make completely idiotic coaching decisions to find out if someone calls him out on it. Clearly it hasn't happened yet
Quote:
I heard each party put Tippett in charge of picking their candidate. Just like tonight's lineup, he hit it out the park.

The Kanye West of hockey.

I think playing one of the worst teams in the league would be the best time to play the young players, no?
All I want for Christmas is DT fired.
Quote:
OEL continues getting rocked by opposition because Tippett has neutered anyone who would stand up for him...
Quote:
It's obvious tippets system is out dated. He hasnt changed it or adapted to other teams systems. I imagine he will lose the group of the season keeps headed this way.
How Swede it Is
Quote:
There's a lot of weird stuff happening with Swedish hockey players.
Carl Hagelin from the University of Michigan ... is Swedish? Robin Lehner? Alex Edler? Marcus Kruger? I don't like Scandinavian names that don't end with "sson."
Just turned on the radio stream, Dauphin not Dvorak, Connauton not Chychrun, and Martinook at center instead of Strome ... FFS ... how long until XX's extra-bitter Coyotes beer goes on sale?
Quote:
Ugliest one goal lead.......... EVER.
Tkachuk ties it up
Quote:
Of course Tkachuk's spawn scores.
Quote:
9 to 1 on the SOG in the 3rd period...Tippett hockey, protect that lead boys, no need to create any offense, all we need to do is play solid defense.
Quote:
We honestly look like an AHL team
Quote:
That’s giveing us too much credit.
Quote:
Do we even have an offence anymore?
Frolik in OT
Quote:
That’s it… I’m calling it. They need to have some changes here.. Our PP is garbage, the PK is garbage, our 5v5 is borderline garbage, and our offense is garbage. We got DOMINATED in the 3rd period by a team who played the night before when we were well rested. Not only that… the team is as bad as we are in the standings. Can’t blame the rookies because the only ones playing were 2 on the fourth line (Crouse and Dauphin) and DeAngelo… No… this is on the rest of the team and the coaching. Unacceptable loss tonight. To get dominated like that is just unacceptable. Their best player got run by a plug and what do they do? Nothing, just let the Flames have their way. That game was just boring to watch for most of it, too.
Yea, that loss pissed me off lol. Sorry for the rant but come on, Yotes.

Never question the decision of older players. Always get their back. That's how you become a player's coach.

**** mouthguard chewing is annoying. Tkachuck looks like he is trying to trying to actually physically consume his.
Quote:
Tkachuk with another gorgeous snipe. Starts laying out the hits on the next shift. This is the player we wanted Virtanen to be...
Quote:
I was hoping we would get Tkachuk, but we gotta live with what we have. The top 4 picks were all above the rest, and I read numerous times that around 5-12 would all be similar type players. No matter who we got at #5 would've given us this feeling
Quote:
Define "lots". I remember the majority being happy with the options of Tkachuk/Dubois and being more than pleased with whichever option was left over. Going back to the Vs threads, there were not many clamouring for anyone else, much less a defender. Only Brown seemed to make a late push once the Button hype started after the U18s.
Quote:
es yes..every team can use a smart, smooth skating defenceman somewhere in their line- up.
My bottom line prediction...Matthew Tkachuk will be more of an impact player in the NHL than Olli Joulevi.
Since when was this cupboards bare team in the position to draft for position over BPA when they have the bleakest organizational forward talent in the league.

Just got back from the game. Tkachuk was a beast all night. Same with Ferland. Both had that look in their eyes...
Johnson is so smooth and easy going in the net. What a solid pickup. Gio had the puck bouncing on him all night and couldn't hit the net to save his life. Brodie is slowly but surely coming back to form.
All in all a great game. Was expecting a loss. But the Flames absolutely dominated the 3rd like I haven't seen them dominate in a while.
My initial reply was because I thought it said solid "backup." Right now, Johnson is the starter. Better record, GAA, Sv%. Just so calm and steady in net, I'm not sure if the team just plays worse with Elliott in net or with Elliott in net the team plays worse but keep riding Johnson's (that's what she said) hot hand. He's deserves a string of starts. Just a quality goaltender.

the last two games have been the 'grindiest' games the flames have played in quite a while: press all over the ice, hard on the forecheck, work the puck around in the offensive zone, clog the neutral zone. definitely beginning to feel like a different style from the block-stretch up gameplan hartley had.
we're still pretty much relying on one line to score, but our top 3 d have been improving. hamilton looks like a new player this season. much more assertive and after some early struggle looks really complete. glad he's finally being played where he belongs. gio screws up pretty routine plays but he's finding more ways to help than at the beginning of the season. brodie was noticeably controlling the game when he was on the ice aside from a bad icing in the third.
ferland deserves more ice time than the 7 minutes he got. he makes a difference every shift.
for the most part, they've been tighter defensively and have started to transition better. hard to draw too much from playing the worst team in the league. hope to keep improving and play well against the big dogs. that cali trip+nyr must have been eye-opening for them.
Okay I love the win. Guys it was the Coyotes let's not get to giddy.
Totally agree. Flames come from behind and win in OT against the worst team in the league. The Coyotes were awful. I love the win, but lets be reasonable and wait until the Flames show this against a team in the playoff conversation.

I'm not sure what you mean. No one here is satisfied that they've turned any corners here. But can't we enjoy a win? There's been so few. Enjoy it

Seems like a long time since the team has played a stretch where the team has only surrendered a single goal or less in two straight games. Hopefully a sign that the team is coming around into playing a better team game.
The Coyotes are going to be black and blue after last nights game! I don't want to pick on Gaudreau, but when games get 'heavy' Johnny becomes target #1 and then the rest of the roster has 'to keep an eye out for their little brother' type mentality. As opposed to last night when they just run roughshod over Arizona and to a man are tough and each holds their own weight. Heck, I even saw Backlund throwing hits on the forecheck last night. Last night looked to me like Burke's truculent vision and it looked like the players were enjoying themselves and growing confidence in their puck moving chemistry. Great goaltending from Johnson doesn't hurt either. Exciting game.
The way they are playing 5-5 is good. Tight checking, now learning how to transition more effectively.
PP is still crap, which has hurt. Goaltending was poor to start, better now with Johnson. Still our star players are struggling. The one that was getting hot went down, but Monahan, Bennett, Brodie and Gio just simply have to execute better offensively.
I thought they simplified the PP and they got a bunch of good looks in the game. They didn't score but I think they are getting better. No doubt that they need their top players to get things back on track. As terrible as things have gotten, and this team probably could be the poster child for Murphy's Law, they are still right there. 2 points back from a wild card and 4 points from the Pacific lead. That is just mind bottling.

This is ridiculous. No they don't.
Johnny has done just fine avoiding checks in 'heavy' games his entire life.

I don't get it. The Flames play a "heavier" game without Gaudreau because they are freed from watching out for him? This doesn't make much sense to me.
In any event, a good game and a good win.
I thought that both Hamilton and Brodie looked good tonight. It was a refined to see Brodie looking much like 2014-15 Brodie. Things will get even better once Giordano starts hitting the net.

Sure. But you're attempt at being level-headed completely ignores the fact that, despite the come from being win, the Flames absolutely dominated the game.
Shot attempts and scoring chances were as lopsided as you ever see in an NHL game.
Even on the Coyotes coverage, which is as homerish and supportive as any broadcast in the league, they stated over and over again how badly the Yotes were getting dominated and how fortunate and misleading the lead was.
It's only one game. Against one of the weakest teams in the league.
But enjoy it and give them credit for the effort.
