If the season wasn't over before it certainly is now. I don't see anyone on this team capable of stepping up and jump starting an already weak pop-gun offense. As Brian Burke once said himself - may as well tank. And then hope a high draft pick turns out to be better than what they're projecting.
Sad day for the Flames.

because then the officials take offence that somebody is angry they aren't doing their job, and they start calling more penalties against the complaining team.

Somebody needs to step up, or the only player breaking 40 points this season will be Backlund

Last night confirmed my impression of GG. Not NHL material. Would have loved to see Playfair going nuts behind the bench.

General consensus from players (paraphrasing): Gaudreau injury sucks but all star players in the league get targeted. #Flames
Guys. If all the players have this view, including the captain. And your opinion is they need bloody retribution, yelling, coach temper tantrums, maybe you just need to take a deep breath.
Watch how Crosby gets targeted, or Kane. NHLers are dicks.

A little emotion from a 6-10-1 team would be nice.

Absolutely. Star players get injured all the time and now that it happened to a Flame there are way too many fans here going overboard. We have seen plenty of star players get injured from bad hits over the years and while you never like to say its our turn but the odds are that it's going to hit your favorite team eventually.

A little heart/emotion/interest from this squad would be nice. This whole "meh" attitude is starting to become disheartening.

So you want John Tortorella as your head coach? You want Gulutzan to throw stuff on the ice or break sticks so the video can be shown over and over on some top 10 coach meltdown segments of Sportscenter? It's been a miserable season for the Flames but it's possible this forum has been worse. We have seen complaining that Treliving took Feaster's small, fast, skilled team and made it big and slow over the weeks and then a star player gets injured and fans are blasting Treliving for having a soft team despite the fact he's added bigger and stronger players. Fans here criticize Torts all the time for being a loose cannon but because Johnny got hurt they are pining for the Flames coach to make an idiot of himself?
Talk about overreaction all around. This place is borderline nuts right now.

Agree 100%. I'm actually surprised Johnny's been this durable in his career so far. Seems like I've seen him get slashed like this every time I go to a home game. I only watch him when he's on the ice and the abuse he takes behind the play is crazy so this really doesn't surprise me at all - it was just a matter of time before someone took him out.

GOAT!

The other thing that hasn't been talked about is if Johnny was wearing his wrist guards or not. I remember something from his first season where a took a slash to the wrist and commented after about how he doesn't wear wrist guards because they restrict his movement.
Don't get me wrong, though. The "it's your own fault for not wearing wrist guards" thing is absolutely not an excuse for the refs to not call this stuff.

Why go to torts right away? There are plenty of coaches in this league who show emotion and are not scared to go after the refs. It's not the size of the player who makes a team tough. Chaisson is as soft as they come and his is big but he doesn't hit and has no grit at all.

Because Playfair was such an effective NHL head coach?

I bet if you measured the times a player got hooked or tripped that resulted in a penalty versus the times a player got slashed on the hands that result in a penalty, there would be a much higher percentage of penalties called for the hook or tripped compared to the slash.
A hook is a penalty, a trip is a penalty.
Why isn't a slash on the hands? A slash on the hands of a puck carrier should be an automatic two minutes, just like a high stick to the face is.
I'm not sure why so many instances of a slash on the hands of puck carrier don't get called. It's baffling.
21 times in one game and no penalty, and results in a broken finger to one of the games stars. Unbelievable.
Gio is kind of right in that, what can the players do? Are they going to take 21 instigators? It's up to the officials to call a penalty when an infraction occurs. For some reason, a slash to the hands is "just part of the game", despite what the rule book says.
