My only hope now is that the Flames can maybe rally around this and somehow find a way to turn their season around despite missing their best player. They won a playoff series missing their best defenceman at the time, so I suppose anything is possible.

Only problem is that this team so far has shown none of the drive or fire that we saw in that 2014 team, so yea, they're basically screwed.

If the refs actually did what they're supposed to do, this wouldn't have happened.

You know what to do, Dennis.

I would approve of this. And this would likely be a turning point in the season.

Member the one time Mony dropped the gloves? I member.

Well of course there's nobody there that will replace Johnny's offense but it will open up opportunity for Klimchuk, Poirier, etc. I'm not a big fan of how this team uses training camp and a small handful of preseason games as their primary method of evaluating players they have drafted high and spent resources developing. It takes 20+ games for most players to hit their stride from AHL to NHL.

I love when CP goes full pitch fork.

Have to think Burke is all over this. Calls to the league but also to our own players. Not exactly a band of brothers out there.

2 years ago, the Flames season was over because Giordano went down with his bicep injury. Then the players stepped up and rallied because he was out and they made it all the way to the 2nd round.

Just because Gaudreau is likely gone for the remainder of the calendar year, doesn't mean that the Flames season is done. The Flames will need players like Bennett, Tkachuk, Monahan, and likely Jankowski (who I would recall in this situation) to contribute offensively to replace Gaudreau.

Doesn't mean that the road got any easier though. Players will have to step up and come together in order to over come this latest piece of adversity.

There are two possible solutions here. Either the league cracks down on slashes and suspends for slashing with intent to injure, or the team needs to start injuring opposing players in retaliation. Cheap shot or not, it doesn't matter. Cross checks or high sticks to the face, knock out some teeth. A message must be sent, because the status quo is not acceptable. No point in icing skill players if we're just going to put up with human garbage like boudreau, suter and staal taking them out at will. The league has had ample time to nip this in the bud and did nothing, so with our season over anyway, let them deal with the fallout.

This just reminds me of that play where Gaudreau took 4 or 5 hooks and slashes that went uncalled, the puck goes the other way to a McDavid breakaway, and he gets a penalty shot when Wideman taps him from behind.

This league is just awful.

This same BS was happening in the World Cup too and not getting called there either.

What blows my mind is that the NHL calls so many penalties that are harmless, but when players are getting injured they don't call anything. I believe that they have lost sight of that fact that penalties are for protecting players, not for producing scoring opportunities.

Hey, another massive organizational failure from the Flames' suits, as they are unable to protect their best player from a clear and ongoing problem. Whaddya know?

I don't know what Gulutzan was doing about it, but I can tell you what he WASNT doing (i.e. Getting mad, getting on the refs, having his players retaliate, putting muscle on Gaudreau's line, etc etc), and I can also tell you how effective Gulutzan's interventions were.

But hey, it takes AT LEAST 20 games of learning systems before a coach can tell his players to take a few runs at somebody. And of course this roster just might not be talented enough to swing a stick at somebody in retaliation. Any other excuses we want to give for this latest coaching failure? Gaudreau's new contract broke his hand? His hand broke because Monahan missed training camp? Look at this list of other coaches who did nothing to protect their star players the first 16 games of the season but then went on to success?

Yeah, but do they inflict charged bolt damage + life steal? If it's not at least +65 defense then not interested.

Kudo's for taking something like a Gaudreau injury and turning it into a complaint about the new coach's system.

Bring up Eatbread pop him on the top line !

and to everyone calling for immediate on ice justice , It just doesn't happen anymore ,so forget it
Players are not built like they were in my day (80s') they just don't have the same killer instinct.
There was always a fear back then some could/would snap at any moment. I've witnessed a lot of violent stuff back then ,and I wouldn't go back to the wild wild west tyvm.

The slashes on Johnny were some nasty Fn' chops ,but no huge 2 handers I wonder about his gloves.

Player safety and reffing is an inconsistent joke. They can miss 10 slashing calls, but heaven forbid they miss a delay of game call when someone rifles it over the glass.

21 slashes....someone probably already posted this, but Haynes with his take:

http://www.flamesfrom80feet.ca/2016/...-21-slash.html

That is BB telling his boys to slash and whack. Look forward to the next meeting. Dec 2nd. And we have the last change. This team better band together.
