Claude Julien and Lindy Ruff are both on deals expiring at the end of this season. Maybe we'll luck out and one of them will shake free at season's end.

If Gulutzen is a good NHL coach, then we will know it by the end of the season. Your opinion as to what is best for this team is only that: an opinion, and not an especially relevant one at that. The Flames GM hired a coach that fit his criteria for what this team needs at this juncture. Given his own experience and credentials you will never convince me after 16 games that you have a better handle on what this team needs than he does.

My point stands: young coaches often struggle in the early-going, and it is far too soon to make conclusive judgments about Gulutzen here in mid-November.

I don't need a better handle on the team to see that the current coach is no good.

Thats why I see a proper coach in place by summer. There will be a few candidates they can scoop up.

Ruff would essentially be Hartley 2.0. Probably more polished in some areas as he is more experienced, but he has always been an offensive-first type of coach in the same manner as Hartley. IIRC, Burke even stated that Dallas and Calgary played the exact same system last season.

I think to be perfectly fair then, you can't compare Gulutzan to first time coaches. They all gained valuable experience from their first go-round as a head coach. Maybe compare their second opportunities and see how they did as compared to Gulutzan, and where Gulutzan falls in that respective range.

I do, however, agree with TKFlames in that it is rather irrelevant as he is the coach now, and the results need to start coming in for this organization. I don't think anyone wants 3+ years of him gaining enough experience to become a really good coach. He either is, or he isn't, and a team at the start of a rebuild where there is no pressure to win is perhaps the best situation for coaches to cut their teeth into the business, or become longer term associate coaches on winning teams. I for one would hope that IF Gulutzan really is a dud, that we aren't the team that is going to give up 'X' amount of seasons helping him learn his craft.

Let's also look at our coach and his first sixteen games elsewhere:

Glen Gulutzan (Dallas Stars)
11-4-0
Took over for Marc Crawford, a cup winning coach just like Hartley.

So what you are saying it, it can get even worse after the first 15 games?

So putting Hamilton with Gio and bennett with chiasson and stajan for tonight. Lets say they win the game. Does that somehow mean you keep this crap together? i mean its not even a sustainable line mix going forward to have bennett with Stajan. what the hell? If we are going to preach patience....then have patience with the line combos too. GG needs to be launched.

I think you mean 11-5. Exactly what Brent's trajectory was in his first season with the Flames.

The Stars came back down to earth in November, losing 5 straight from the 11th to the 19th.

Lost 5 of the first 6 games in January, then going 2-5 to start Feb effectively ended the Stars season. Even a 10-1 tear going into the middle of March couldn't get them into the playoffs, as they went 2-9 to close out the season.

Funny enough, Gulutzan was 3-1 vs. the Flames that season.

I think it's fair to take "coach of the year" out of the thread title now

The game day interview is worth a watch. He looks and sounds like someone shot his dog. Not exuding energy and positivity.

Pretty hard to look at your coach and be inspired by that crap. He just doesn't seem like he cares to be here at all. I know his family doesn't.

####ing millionaires playing a kids game need to be 'inspired' by the appearance of their coach in a media interview.

He shows the same personality everywhere. Why would he be and different in the room?

Whatever they do let the next coach hire his own assistants.

As most families say, in most similar situations. Shockingly, it seems that people don't like change.

Isn't that his normal demeanour though? I have yet to see him excited or showing any life/energy.
