Jeffrey Dean Morgan is absolutely nailing this role. He's incredible. The show right now is pretty much him and Andrew Lincoln, and together they've created possibly the most emotionally violent couple of episodes of television I can remember. The atmosphere of the whole thing is extremely difficult to look at, and intentionally so. It's like watching Reservoir Dogs.

Rick acting all tough with Spencer almost made me barf.
Rick and Negan are same people. Rick and his crew killed off several of Negan's people, and they've only killed 2 of Rick's crew. Rick is no saint and his behaviour with Spencer again proved that. Rick will overpower who he can just like Negan.
He's come in and destroyed Alexandria. I'm in Negan's camp.

You're probably just being facetious, but I've never seen Rick and Co. hold anyone captive and psychologically and physically torture them, build a walker-wall of dissidents, straight up execute people for not submitting to their extortion, and run what is essentially a prison hierarchy at their home camp.
Rick is no saint for sure, but his motivation has always been to protect his people. Spencer never bought into Rick as a leader (fair), but also prioritized himself over the group with stashing food and guns. He compromised everyone with his actions. Rick had a right to be pissed.
Alexandria was headed for disaster without Rick's presence. Those people were completely sheltered and unprepared for the Wolves and now the Saviors.

Rick threatened to break his jaw if he brought up Glenn and Abraham again, blaming Rick. I'd say that was a pretty fair reaction.

Yeah, Spencer is a juvenile idiot, he just could never accept the fact that Rick replaced his mommy and then little Spencer's privileges all dried up.
He probably even blames Rick for his father's death despite the fact that when it came time to deal with the alcoholic, abusive idiot all his mommy did was send him to bed with no supper and then he just came back drunk and angry. Wow, who could have seen that coming?
Rick is by far no Saint, but hes primarily Goal-Oriented and benevolent. He does what he does to accomplish his objective (keeping his people safe) and hes seen enough to understand the consequences of not acting.
I think hes twice stepped away from being 'The Man' and had to be brought back because the world they live in needs someone to be 'The Rick' so the rest of them dont have to and can still survive.

This explains the major difference between Rick and Negan pretty well. Rick hasn't built some luxury pad for himself with a harem of women.
The issue with Rick is that he is far from a perfect leader. He's a hothead. He's stubborn. He can be mentally weak at times. The Walking Dead world is just so f-ed up that people need a person like Rick, so he keeps getting thrust back into leadership roles. He's not perfect but the best thing around. Even the people who are close to him know that Rick is almost a figurehead or image of a leader more than anything. People like Carl, Michonne, and Daryl are way more stable than Rick, but they lack the desire/ability to be part of yet alone lead a cohesive group.
It's interesting. The main group is a bunch of loan wolves, who for whatever reason gravitate around Rick, who is a bit of a nutbar but also does put the group before himself.

Rick doesn't care if people go along with him, as long as they're not a threat. He's about group safety. Negan is all about submission. If you noticed, two episodes ago, when he's talking to Dwight and offers him his pick of the women to sleep with, he says "anyone you want, as long as she says yes". You wouldn't think he'd care about something like that, but it's part of his whole modus operandi. People have to actively and positively surrender to him, and he'll exert pressure until they do. That's how he breaks them. That's the most uncomfortable thing about watching him.

The "if she says yes" was only for his ex-wife I believe. I took the scene to mean he could take any of them, but when it came to his ex she needed to say yes.
That way he can test both D and the ex.

Maybe I'm mis-remembering but I thought he first offered his former wife, but then said, "I'm just messing with you. You can have anyone else as long as she says yes". Could be totally wrong, this is just from memory.

I memory isn't the best, so you might be right.
Either way it was totally a test.

I would love that. I bet he was a waiter or a bartender or something.

I vote no on backstory for Negan, most of the time these characters are much cooler if left to mystery and viewer interpretation. did Vader get cooler when we discovered he's actually a whiny brat inside a robot suit?
just caught up after falling behind a couple weeks, and boy the level of Dwight submission is freaky, like Game of Thrones Reek class (Rick is getting there too). the dude walks in on his stolen wife getting a pregnancy test cause of his boss and when it's negative all he can say is "...maybe next time"? wow, Negan's d*** is very far down a lot of throats in this part of the country.

I dont know, King Ezekiel was a part-time Community Theater Actor and Zookeeper. How cool is that?
I think it would be kind of cool to see these people working their normal jobs, living their normal lives on the day the Zombie Apocalypse hits.

If you're not one of the people Negan considers tough and violent, you end up as a peon worker type and at the mercy of the thugs above you.

So basically Negan is the Kim Jong Il of the Walking Dead.

Pretty sure Negan used to work in an office and someone took his red stapler. Not sure what else could generate that kind of vindictiveness.

Well...perhaps he was a criminal and unwillingly had a penis shoved down his throat?

Kim Jong-Il was more of a fat idiot who inherited his post from his father...but yes Negan follows the classic dictator model pretty closely. `
