Yep. I agree, I miss Cuthbert calling hockey.

Steinberg just threw in yet another "Johnny on the spot" reference into tonight's post-game broadcast for Kesler's first goal when recapping the game.

Bob Cole, Greg Hughson (I choose to be ignorant towards all the Canucks ass-kissing) are my favorites.
Gary Thorpe gets an honorable mention for NHL 07 to NHL 14.

I used to like when the Leafs had Harry Neale and Joe Bowen. Both were huge Leaf homers but they made the game fun.
My current favourite duo is Gord Miller and Ferraro. Miller calls a great game and Ferraro's comments are always interesting. They have good banter and Ferraro is one of the few broadcasters who was actually a really good hockey player which is kind of cool.
|
I started thinking that I was the only one that liked Ferraro. I think he has come a heck of a long way from when he first started. I thought he was a bit too emotional at first, especially allowing an overall 'negative' atmosphere to permeate through at all times. Now he seems just 'honest' and insightful, but not really negative unless there is reason to be (for instance, when there is a blatant dirty hit or something). I have really started enjoying him actually over the last few seasons.

Yes, Thorpe and Bill Clemens were a great duo when ESNP did hockey.

Really hesitant to post this as I really like Kelly Rudey and he seems like a good guy but I've been noticing his on the fly commentary is starting to get a little messy. Still great in studio segments but sometimes his color commentary for games has had some stuttering and what not. Maybe he just needs to plan some talking points better, although that's obviously hard to do as a color guy.

True, but I think Dock Emery and Eddy Olsen are doing fine for the NHL games.

Do you feel the same way about Gordie Howe? Same kind of name as Dougie. The funny thing is I think his actual given birth name is Dougie, not Doug or Douglas.

Oddly, Dave Hodge actually has street cred as an indie music hipster. I see him around Sled Island.
His top album list of 2014 is pretty good:

[The only person who listens to more recorded music than Dave is probably Dave Fricke from Rolling Stone and we all stopped listening to that guy's opinion years ago (Five Stars for the new U2 record? Why even rate albums when you're just going to hand out participation ribbons?)]

I believe it's Thorne, not Thorpe. But yeah, they were pretty good. Cuthbert is still the best imo and there's nothing to complain about with Ball/Hrudey, that's for sure.

Like - Rick Ball, the guy from Pittsburgh with the cool phrases, and Loved Ed Whalen.
Dislike - Gene "what did you think of Connor McDavid?" Príncipe

And it's not Bill Clemmens it's the former Flame Bill Clement (for the guy you were correcting)

SJ's broadcast duo is one of my favourites in the business.
On the opposite spectrum is ANA's who have to be amongst the worst in the league.

I really don't like any annoucners and pay 0 attention to any announcers when I watch games. I just watch.
If I had to choose I would choose Cuthbert and Ferraro though. I also liked Johnson but I don't know where he is now that sportsnet let him go.
I get really annoyed by Remenda and Hrudey. But Quinn and ball as actual callers don't ever really bother me.

Don't mind Hrudey, but can't stand the fact that he pronounces it 'Cal-gary'.
Dude, you live here. Talk like a local already, sheesh.

I really enjoy the L.A. Kings broadcast team, especially Jim Fox. I can't stand the Pittsburgh announcers. Brutal. Guilty pleasure, that goes to NESN. Edwards is so over the top it seems like a character.

I didn't mind Edwards back in the ESPN 2 days. When he's calling Bruins games though....wow.
Jim Fox and Bob Miller are solid tandem. They've been together for a long, long time.
