An argument could be made that drafting for need in the top 10(within reason), then BPA after that is the way to go. At this point in time top 10 picks seem to be at least 50/50 to crack the NHL in their first year(unless u are the Canucks).
It's a tough call. If I was a GM, and I knew that my #7 pick could be the choice between being fired this off season, or next, I would be very short sighted. In that respect, you have to give credit to Feaster for drafting Jankowski. Even Mackenzie said at the time that there was little chance that managerial group would be around to see Jankowski play in the NHL.
Moral of the story: any GM that's worried about his job should always draft the player closest to making his NHL line up!
