Default Let's Talk Luggage

It's time for some new luggage. I have a decent carry-on, and personal item. But in terms of travel for any period of time, the suitcase I have is raggedy and falling apart.

Any recommendations on relatively inexpensive but still serviceable luggage.

Realistically I only need one full size piece, to check when flying. Only real option I'm looking for is four wheels.

Bought a Samsonite set from Costco a few years ago when it was on sale. Four wheels, expandable handle on top, and the a good strong handle on the side for the luggage Olympics it may go through. Try Costco to see what they have.

Lots of different opinions on luggage. I don't think inexpensive and serviceable can be in the same sentence. Yet there are others who say don't spend much as it's going to get trashed anyways.

I bought a relatively inexpensive set of luggage that lasted exactly one trip and luckily was able to return them despite the damage. They were terrible.

I think going forward, I'm going to try the hard shell type that closes with clamps as opposed to zippers. It's unreal how easily you can open a zippered suitcase and still close it up without the owner even knowing it was opened.

when I fly someplace witht eh wife, I wish we had nice looking and matching luggage; however, I am also fine with a dakine duffle type bag and a suit bag if I need to haul nice stuff

Also don't buy red or black luggage. Everybody has red or black luggage.

Try Winners and Marshalls too.

If you have useless Air Miles to waste, you could try redeeming. I think they have some sets on there.

This.

They're like mattresses. Always at least 60% off at The Bay.

I've heard good things about Tumi bags. I'm due for a new bag but Tumi is ridiculously expensive so I'll probably go with something else. Anyway, they make a nice set of luggage I've been told.

Filson: Might as well have the best.

I love that slogan and the fact that they actually live up to it.

Agreed. My next set, I'm going to buy the funkiest colour I can find, just so it's easy to spot on the carousel.

Dakine makes awesome luggage. My rollerbag is over 10 years old, has over 500 (?) flights on it, hundreds of ski trips, moves, etc. Still going strong. Corners are getting a little worn but that's about it.

Looks like this one

Worth every penny.

I bought two of these for a recent trip to Italy for my wife and I.

https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5030-4...g_0RoCdbjw_wcB

Very sturdy and rolled really well on cobbles and crappy Italian sidewalks. Stuffed into train compartments, luggage racks, tiny Opel trunks, and budget airliners without any damage. Farmer carried two of them up and down stairs at train stations and into AirBNBs easily and even bought the optional backpack strap to hump it over non-paved surfaces.

If you want one you can just buy it off Dakine's CA website for $215. I don't find Dakine products to be all that high quality, though. I have a boot bag and used to have a double ski roller bag from them.

You can get them at the Source.

I have 3 of their roller bags and have has really, really good luck with them I guess. Outlasted every other piece of luggage I have ever owned.

Never had any other of their bags other than backpacks, so I can't comment on ski bags, etc etc

Grabbed this Nixon one this past Feburary.

http://www.nixon.com/ca/en/continent...or=000#start=1

It's been a strong bag so far on the 12 flights this year. Doesn't have the 4 wheels you are looking for though, but been up to the durabilty test so far.

Ogio has really good stuff. Used to travel 2 weeks every month for nearly three years. Best bags I ever bought.
