That said, there is still plenty of time for them to snap out of it. Another 3 game winning streak puts them back at .500. They still have 12 games to play this month. Lots of time. Gaudreau and Monahan looked better today. If they can get going, maybe they can help generate some offense and the W's can follow.

I would suggest the Flames have to win 9 of those 12 games remaining this month to be back on a playoff pace. Better get going fast.

from game 20 through March, the Flames are mostly playing bad teams.
If they are even a game or two under .500 when the calendar changes over to December, they will have a good chance to make up ground.
The problem comes with the "If"...

Yes.... in 2018.
The thing that depresses me is that if the team was this bad last year with that goaltending the Flames likely draft Matthews or Laine. Now this season they have good goaltending so we are looking at another 6th overall pick.

Depressing for sure, but also perfectly aligned with the Flames ownership goal of selling hope until March every season.

GG has a dedication to losing that has not been seen in these parts since the last GG. He would not make the same mistake Hartley did last year, GG would have ridden Hiller right through the end. What does Hartley do? He tries to win, plays his best goalie (out of a weak bunch).
Last year was disappointing in the sense that dead last was in our grasp and Hartley played to win. We have fixed that problem with GG.

Yep, that If. Only problem being that the Flames play not unlike a bad team themselves.

Powerplay Quarterback

I would guess that from here on in the Flames will see a lot of backup goalies. So they have that going for them.

It is pretty hard to find an example where any team has tied up so much cap space for so long for so little.
Flames 2019-20
Gaudreau Monahan Frolik Brouwer Gio Hamilton Brodie
7 players accounting for half the cap allowed.
Really hard to see who can be added to this non-playoff core better than Backlund/Elliott/Bennett/Tkachuck/Engelland that will make this a playoff team.
Flames went all in on Gio Hamilton, Monahan, Gaudreau ..... right now it would seem that the realization of how long shot of these bets were.

Laughable like always. Let's write off the core you listed which has all but 2 players in their 20's and 3 of which are under 24. Monahan and Gaudreau are done, Dougie has peaked and it is all over for this team. Gotta win the cup when your core players are under 21 or is is rebuild time

This will be the 2nd year in a row that the this core will be golfing while the fan base plays the lottery app to see if the Flames pick one of the top 3.... The goalie excuse for last year has become very sketchy.

So the season is over in your mind?
This is the first year that Monahan and Gaudreau are not on ELC's. This is Brouwer's first season with the team. Giordano is coming off a 21 goal 56pt season. Brodie coming off 45pts in 75 games, and Dougie with 43pts. Frolik and Backlund look good this year.
Believe it or not there are 68 games left in the season and they can still make the playoffs.

Yep the Flames need 86 pts in their last 68 games ... 97 was the point total when they where the #8 team in the conference 2 pts ahead of LA in 2013-14
to get 86 pts in 68 games the flames have to to play like a a top 6 in the league team for the rest of the season .... 104 pt seasonal rate.
what signs do see that the Flames are a top 3/4 the west team for the rest of the season based on the team that they have put on the ice this year?

you are listing the accomplishments of a team that finished 26th in a 30 team league.
With Gio/Brodie/Hamilton in 2015-16 Sv % was .892 and GA was 3.13
This year the sv % is down to .878 and GA up to 3.57
Saying that the Flames top-3 defense is good is like saying that Hall-RNH-Eberle was the best line in hockey from 2013-2016.

What if the the the last WC spot is 87 like last year? Things happen. I think people tend to look to far down the road. That is why I prefer the 7 game segment approach.

Minnesota got in with 87pts last year. 97 is not always the cutoff.
Heard a stat on the FAN this morning that the team has only had 7 practices all season. They have played the most games in the league to date. Get some practice time and have a good string of 20 games and they are in the mix

Historically bad goaltending from 3 goalies not in the NHL anymore was a huge factor in that. They are struggling but at the same time these are 3 defenders that have proven to be very solid at their position when using fancy stats in their career. I am not so quick to write them off as you are
