Concerning but key takeaway is to use strong password, use a name brand router, and reputable IOT devices.

I see the auromation devices online that are cheap Chinese product and stay away. I know that isn't a guarantee. However the massive attack referenced here were those devices with hard code passwords in the firmware.

So good message in here, but there are some common sense steps people can take to lock it down well.

ya the problem is firmware, not really passwords.

Tough to do anything as a consumer if the hardcoded password is 'password' and everyone on the internet knows it.

But, probably a good idea to disconnect your fridge from the Wifi if you don't use that feature.

Yup...those kinds of devices (especially baby monitors, security cameras, etc) should be treated as hostile, and VLAN'd/isolated as such.

It's hard now. We have a Motorola wifi baby monitor. I was surprised it was such a piece of crap until I realized Motorola just buys licensed crappy Chinese stuff and throws their logo on it.
