Army in Calgary?
Hey,
I was driving to MRC last week in that neighbourhood between West Hills and MRC. (You cut off richmond road, as if you were going to go to those big apartment buildings).
Anyway, I saw an army guy running down the sidewalk with a full kit and gun and everything...
Then, about 5 minutes later, there was what I assume was a whole platoon running down the street... m16s and all.
anyone know about this? Obviously training, but why in Calgary? I thought we didn't have the base, and as such, no army training... especially with guns in residential areas.
edit:
just dawned on me... Reserves.

I went to elementary school in that neighborhood. Saw entire platoons of soldiers running down the road regularly. There used to be a base near by.
They closed the army stuff in Calgary though and kept it in Edmonton didn't they?? odd.

There are still several reserve units based out of Calgary. The highlanders are here, as are elements of the Kings own armored, and 14th service battalion which has elements downtown and by MRC. There's the sigs out of Tecumseh and the Naval reserve. So while there's not a large contingent of regular units there are probably a few hundred reservists running around, and it is Wednesday night which is a traditional training and admin night.

Not so odd when you consider that Calgary never sends a Liberal MP to Ottawa. Same conditions apply to VIA rail going through Edmonton instead of Calgary.

Or maybe because the CN mainline runs through Edmonton and not Calgary.

and the CP mainline runs through Calgary. What's your point? Last I looked VIA was independant of CN or CP and the Calgary run is the preferrred run for tourists and is shorter, not having to detour north.

My point is this;
From ask.com
"Officially, the move of the western transcontinental train from the CP to CN line was in order to serve more remote communities; however, this move was seen as being politically motivated. Coincidentally, several prominent members of the governing Progressive Conservatives were elected along the CN route. It was also notable that Harvie André, one of Alberta's federal cabinet ministers who represented Calgary, was fairly public about the fact that he did not care if he never saw a passenger train again in his life."
So what does this have to do with federal Liberals being elected in Edmonton and not in Calgary?

Have you not heard ' the squeaky wheel gets the grease'. You can do whatever to Calgary but one thing is constant, they elect conservatives [or whatever is their right leaning flavor of the day]. They don't vote Liberal so they don't have any seats up for grabs. Edmonton, not so much, so they have more power, no matter what government.

Once again (emphasis mine);

and once again, the VIA route and the army base location was a political decision and not a practical decision.
Whatever Andre said, it was a kick in the teeth to Calgary when our economy wasn't that strong.

It sounds like his beef is that it was the PC's that did this, not the Liberals (as was slandered in this thread).

Indeed it was. It wasn't however because Clagary did not elect liberal MPs.
CPR realised a long time ago that ridding themselves of passenger service was best for the company. CP Air-->Canadian, CP Ships-->Carnival cruise lines. I'm sure that the governments decsion to move The Canadian north was welcomed by the CPR as in its place, a more lucrative frieght train could be run.

The Army base consolidation WAS a liberal one and not one that I disagree with.
