Flames look quite bad right now. Not even close to the team that was in Chicago and St Louis.

Ryan and Turris have always been thorns in the Flames' side.

We're definitely better than the last half of that period. Lost some confidence after those couple bouncers, whereas they were playing great when they had it early on. Gotta be mentally stronger as a team.

heep233 should be happy, Flames using a 1-3-1 powerplay formation.

It's striking how much bad penalties can turn the momentum. Flames started off just fine.

I wonder if there are stats on goalies for clean shots vs deflected shots against. Might help partially stratify out the team-effect on SV% and the goalie's true ability.

Darren Haynes ‏@DarrenWHaynes
Helped by a couple costly trips to the penalty box, #Flames were outshot 11-1 over the final 14 minutes of the first period.

Thoughts on the first period:

Great first few minutes up until the Hamilton goal. Then they backed off and got overconfident. The Sens started reading all the breakouts and the Flames were hemmed in.

Pretty even until the Tkachuk penalty. Clean face-off win for Ottawa and a tip shot and we're tied. Take another penalty in the offensive zone a few minutes later...same story. Special teams letting us down at the moment.

After those power play goals they looked like they did early in the season. No urgency, no awareness, confused and disorganized play. Elliott doing his best to keep the team calm until they turned it around late in the period.

This is going to happen at times, but they can't get so out of sorts when things don't go their way. Mental resiliency needs to be better.

Part of coaching. Gotta turn it around.
