My guess is Clinton drops the tape of Donald calling a black contestant on the Apprentice a lazy 'n' in a day or two, this puts the fear of god into the undecideds and is rapidly followed by the FBI releasing a bunch of harmless emails and declaring it all no problem.
I could even see this as a plan to blunt the claims that the FBI was biased towards her, just enough to look like they're not but not enough to put Trump in.
Well, if you want to deal in worst case scenarios, it would be classified information got passed to one of those recipients (and they weren't cleared for it) and it was another email that she didn't disclose to the FBI.
That is almost guaranteed to be jail time / impeachment and obviously what Republicans are hoping for.

Basically confirms the criticisms that he's doing something not normally done, that he knows that there's a good chance it'll be misunderstood, and that there's nothing of significance known, that they don't even have the emails in question (a reporter mentioned that earlier that they need a court order even to look at the emails which makes sense, proper procedure and all that).

I wonder if this letter is leaked intentionally by the FBI to add context to what was in the original letter to congress. If he wanted his first letter to be kept private he could have classified it so I think he knew what would happen if he sent it.

You're probably right, but it isn't surprising that the correct thing is being done in a way that's damaging to Clinton assuming it was the letter's Republican recipients that leaked it.
The emails were not to or from Clinton, and contained information that appeared to be more of what agents had already uncovered, the official said, but in an abundance of caution, they felt they needed to further scrutinize them.
The news is "bigger than Watergate" according to Trump. That's the problem with hysteric hyperbole, you have to keep ratcheting it up.
