"Hendo"

To all the "Benzo" proponents out there.....just take note. That's how bad the nickname is. No good all the way around.

Calgary: meaningful ceremony takes place where the Chief of Police or various members of the Calgary Fire Department present the team's captain with a hat or helmet in the hopes that it will inspire the team. Various formalities are exchanged and said hat or helmet is then donned by whichever player best exemplifies the traits that its meant to represent.

Edmonton: Hendricks goes to the store, sees motorcycle helmet, thinks it's sick, calls buddies who confirm that it's sick. Buys helmet, brings to locker room.

You can't make this stuff up...

Not really. Conroy brought the green hard had over from something similar the Blues did.

Hendricks seems like the type of guy who would buy a sons of anarchy vest to wear around town.

I could see Hendo on a hog with McGiggles in the sidecar.

Nothing like the clown college of Edmonton media to verify that small sample sizes ARE reflective of the whole.

I’ve cautioned many who claim Corsi or Fenwick is an accurate stat to evaluate an individual. I believe they are better served to look at evalutating a team, but when you try solely use them to isolate an individual’s talent or contributions, the results can be misleading.

Russell naysayers felt because Calgary was bad at generating and allowing shots when he was on the ice and he was the main culprit. It can be a very misleading premise, because those stats rely heavily on what the other four skaters on your team are doing. Much like plus-minus can be misleading, so, too, can trying to evaluate a player using only one statistic.

The system a team plays is a major factor, and in Edmonton the Oilers’ attacking, aggressive style in the defensive zone plays to Russell’s strengths. His best attributes are his speed, puck handling and passing and early this season he is succeeding in this system and not being in positions where he has to block a lot of shots.
Meanwhile...

@Kent_Wilson
Kris Russell’s PDO so far is a team high 107.5. His corsi is a second last 47.7. Anyone crowing about him after 4 games is in for a surprise
@Kent_Wilson
Related - I hope the Oilers re-sign Russell to a long deal based on a short term PDO spike.
PDO essentially being metric of luck (5v5 save % divided by 5v5 shooting percentage) and how skewed the "eye test" can be with limited viewings. Russel's numbers still are far from great. But Oilers are going to Oil.

Its amazing how the story changes as soon as he's part of the Oilers. Suddenly he's awesome and an amazing signing, and the advanced stats that we blasted em for, they're meaningless because we play such a unique style of hockey.

By game 40, Oiler opinions on Kris might be different. He is what he is.

It's 4 games.

There's another 20 sets of 4 games over which a player (and team.....) can give off a vastly different impression. I think we have a better idea of what Kris Russell is than what the Edmonton fans/media do. All players regress/progress to their norms eventually.

At least give him his 2 weeks of being one of the best depth signings ever. After all the scolding he's received from the analytics folks, this is probably nice for him.

No sidecar yet until McGiggles gets his next contract.

Surprised that ugly biker helmet wasn't brought in earlier. Might have saved Hall from some IR time as he was always banging his head into things.

Most tight knit biker groups are gang bangers who sell drugs and kill people. What a great idea.

And to the 50 year old bikers who are going to be offended by this post and write out a 5 paragraph reply about how you and your church buddies ride on Sunday's and it is peaceful, save yourself the effort.

I know not all bikers are gang bangers but that's what a tight knit biker group usually does.

The Helmet seems a little weird on its own, but once you consider it in the greater context of the Oilers organization, and take into account the obvious symbolism of the Lynx Mascot (what's its name, Terrorface?) it makes perfect sense: Everyone in that organization needs a helmet, and if you're only going to have one, it may was well protect the person who has done the most for you lately.
