Don't like Wideman's attitude.
"We played them last year and didn't give up 5 breakaways a game"
Well they also had worse defensemen than Larsson and Russell out there. It sounds like he's blaming the coach.

I think fans need to step away from the ledge and look at this season as one of growth. I think the best way to evaluate this season will be in 20 game segments: did they keep improving? And not just in points, but in style of play.
It's a very young team and the best players are the youngest. They need time to continue to develop.
It's a new coach and a new system. It needs time for them to gain comfort and experience with it.
Let's let things unfold. Show some patience. Continued improvement is the key.
And this wasn't going to be our year anyway - next year is when this team really takes off IMO.
|
Agreed. Hopefully Gulutzan and his systems are good enough to win in this league. If they are this should be a solid growth year where the team gradually improves and pushes for a playoff spot.
Then next year when most of the dead weight is off the roster (and payroll) and they aren't starting fresh with a new coach and systems, plus the young core is a year older and all the forward "pairings" are still in place...that's this teams year to start really becoming a legit contender.

Absolutely, this year is the last of the rebuild. Young core is in place, veterans we want are brought in and the system of the future is being implemented. There are two goalies with impressive resumes in net, and one of them by the end of the season should show they deserve a contract.
In Burke's analogy I think this is the Flames year to walk, and hopefully jog a little to finish it off. Shedding all of the dead salary should allow the one more UFA needed to finish off the top 6 and hopefully one more defenseman and next year the Flames start to run.

Soon we'll have a panic filled thread about whether or not Gaudreau is going to buy a house, for what value, and whether his bed will fit in the upstairs crawl space or not.

I'd agree with you normally, but I'm thinking the expansion threw a bit of a wrench in the works, there might be one more year of rebuilding.

Probably doesn't want a big house to clean to himself and doesn't want to sink money into a smaller place in a down market for the short term.

What a clown. It's bad when you are already heading back into your zone from the blue line when the opposing team is still breaking out from the faceoff circle and you STILL get beat. Guess what Wideman, your TOO SLOW to play in the NHL bum. Pathetic. I bet griffen reinhart would be able to get a breakaway on Wideman even if you gave him a 6 ft head start.

That seems like a big jump for me.
The best player the Flames can possibly lose in an expansion draft would be Jokipakka or Bouma.
The loss of a player of that caliber shouldn't extend a rebuild IMO.

Was Johnson chased in his game last year at the Dome? The one where we got Ristolainened.

I feel like we’ve been doing a lot of good things. The game against Edmonton at home, our first period was great and then we kind of tailed off. We played a good first and second (on Saturday). We sat back in the third, rather than dictating the play, we let the game come to us.
|
The opposite problem we used to have when we started slow and rallied in the 3rd.
We should bring back Hartley for a coaching tag team. Glen can start the game and then sometime in the mid second period he can tag in Bob as a reliever to close out the game.

The two things I learned from the Wideman article, he and the coach not on the same page. Wideman blames the system, coach blames "blunders".
Two, I didn't know that Don Henderson was still out, and I didn't know he may need to retire and may sue. Is this Francis being Francis or an actual thing?

More likely doesn't want the hassles of home ownership. Renting a swank house or apartment in a prime hood is probably a rounding error on his monthly interest accrual.

Nope it's 100% that Don is out for good. He's also got a buncha medical issues derived from the Hit™. I hadn't read yet that he was contemplating litigation, but I'm also not even a little surprised.

It wasn't McDavid who Wideman was giving up the breakaways to...it was Mark Letestu and it was twice.
He did give one up to McDavid though as well.

I thought (maybe I’m completely wrong and misread somewhere) that Henderson was planning on retiring at the end of last season before the Wideman incident? The fact that he * still* hasn’t come back wouldn’t be a huge shocker due to his retiring.
