which is why it's never going to happen, and rightly so.
if they protect 3 defensemen, it's always going to be Gio, Brodie and Dougie. For the Flames it really just boils down to: do you protect Kevin and sacrifice either Brouwer or Frolik, or do protect both of them and sacrifice Kevin? To me, it's option 2 every day, although I really like Kevin. Like I said, ideally they pay off Vegas in order not to take him.

I like Jokipakka but I think a lot of people are overrating him. He hasn't established himself as a #4 guy yet. Probably less than 50% chance he gets picked up in the expansion draft.

Back in the summer, I did a mock expansion draft with 32 other people (1 GM for every team and 3 Vegas GMs).
I protected:
Hunter Shinkaruk
Johnny Gaudreau
Sean Monahan
Troy Brouwer
Michael Frolik
Mikael Backlund
Sam Bennett
Mark Giordano
Dougie Hamilton
TJ Brodie
Brian Elliott
All 3 Vegas GMs took Jokipakka.

Were those 32 people Flame fans? Wouldn't be shocked if they all took Jokipakka since they'd know him the best.
I really like Jokipakka but I think the fear of him being selected is a little over blown. There's going to be some pretty good d-men available and Vegas might want one of our forwards.

Not because I don't think he's extremely valuable to the team, but just because of that contract. He'll likely start to drop off in the next few years and then that's going to be a boat anchor.
So I'd see it as two alright outcomes:
A) Vegas looks at that contract and says "Yeesh, we can get veteran leadership via other avenues, we can't afford to commit that much to someone who may nto be a top defender in a couple years". Then we get to keep him and that's great. Or
B) They take him and although we expose a hole in our line-up, all of a sudden open up 6.75mil a year to our cap during these upcoming years where we're likely going to be in tough to sign all our young guys.
Plus, if we see Jokipakka as a legit top 4 guy, then you've got Brodie, Hamilton and Jokipakka, plus hopefully Kylington becomes a top four guy for the Flames.
I honestly would go that route, but I doubt management would see it the same way. The optics alone would be horrible.
|
If your doing that you trade him or you pay off Vegas not to take him. You don't leave it to chance. He's got a NMC doesn't he?

Between Kulak, Hickey, Kylington, Ollas-Mattsson, Andersson, and maybe even Morrison and Rafikov, we are not so desperate for one player who could be a future #4D that we should give up a captain and top pair guy. Jokipakka is good, but he is not a top pair guy and likely never will be. He is not an impact player, he's just a good filler player who isn't a liability. Chances are he won't be here in three years even if we don't lose him to expansion, simply because he's not a core piece and non-core pieces get shuffled around all the time.
As for cap, I would much sooner offer up Frolik or Brouwer to open up cap space. We overrate these middle six forwards / 4-6D if we think they ought to be protected. They bring nothing to the table that can't be signed on an annual basis in UFA or traded for a 2nd round pick at the deadline. Teams would give up the moon for Mark Giordano.
Gio is an impact defenseman, and should be for most of his contract. At worst he will be an overpaid #4 guy at the very tail end of it who can still generate offense and play intelligent defense. He is also an excellent captain who exemplifies the qualities - persistence, dedication, and intensity.

If I were GM of the Flames, I would find a way to keep Jokipakka in Flames silks. He's been the best all round D man for 2 games in a row. And its definitely noticeable.

The first thing you do is expose a 33 year old defenseman slated to make 6.75 a year until career finish. This is an opportunity to see what you really have. I am a Giordano fan since the he first put on the sweater, but he will not captain this team to a Stanley cup, and it's a young mans game as much as I hate to admit it.

As others have said, if you're willing to lose Giordano then trade him. To let him go for nothing would be ridiculous.
