Bennett should play with Gaudreau and Monahan would be better suited along side Tkachuk and Brouwer

If they could have figured out a way to contain Mcdavid they probably win both games ...

Johnny is way off.....IMO, the contract dispute has affected his play, therefore the team is off.
Systems suck.

I know scoring hasn't exactly been the issue but I still think this team needs a true first-line winger
D has to step it up.... too much money and talent on the back end to be giving up so many high-quality chances
With the caveat that I only caught the first period this game, do my eyes deceive me or has Engelland been the best overall defenseman thus far?

I believe these next 80 games will make the world right again. Just gotta go through the motions and endure the rusty start.
That organization doesn't deserve McDavid, and I have to believe the hockey karma will catch up to them this year just like every other for the past decade. Let's stick with our team and let the rest of the season speak for itself. Beyond Connor, that lineup will still get chewed up and spit out by this western conference. Last I checked, hockey was a team game. Just hang in there, folks.

You have to take away Mcdavid's space .... could a guy like Bennett maybe keep on top of him ??? Is he fast enough ??? You will never completely stop a player like him but you could do a lot better job of it than what the Flames did these past two games ... this Flames team with the right approach can and should beat the Oilers ...

Many mistakes in all areas. The breakaways didn't cause 12 goals over 2 games. When they needed it they made the push they needed and we didn't. I just felt they had that extra gear when they needed it. Maybe just McDavid had that extra gear but either way they got it when they needed it and I don't think we did. Not like 2 years ago when we could expect that extra push every game win or lose. Possibly contracts have been set versus youthful exuberance in the first year, although we are still quite young, but its missing these days.

I understand that Calgary's poor defense has led to many breakaways over the past 2 days. With McDavid's speed, breakaways are even more common (and deadly).
But hasn't this "breakaway" style been somewhat regular for Edmonton over the past few years? Hall was also fast, and he attempted to do the same thing.
Everyone is saying that Calgary's poor defense/coaching system is what has led to these odd-man rushes. But I think it's more of a mixture between Edmonton's style and Calgary's defensive lapses.
This breakaway style is clearly beatable, as Edmonton has been no good for a number of years. McDavid is very fast and skilled, but breakaways are just one trick. One trick ponies are relatively easy to stop. McDavid is great in many areas of the game, but over time, I'm sure Calgary will learn to adjust to his tendencies.

A new day, a new hockey game. We can win against Vancouver. If not, I don't know what to do anymore.
Oh yeah, I updated my signature and avatar in hopes of starting a good season from 10/15/2016 - Present

Just noticed that LA and Chicago are also 0-2 to start the year. So at least we're not the only ones stinkin' up the league at the moment. Let's hope the Flames can turn things around against the Canuckleheads tomorrow.

I'd sure feel a lot better about a slow start with a couple or three recent cups in our back pocket.

We all know Gaudreau's better than what he's shown.
We saw him elevate every line he was on at WCH, against the best. You could say he's having his own training camp of sorts since he wasn't able to have it with the rest of the team, which unfortunately will encompass the first few games. But will get back to being Johnny soon enough.

So far, Wideman has done nothing but show me that he's done as a hockey player. No footspeed left whatsoever and a complete liability more often than not.

To be honest, the three things that are bugging me the most:
1. Invisible Johnny. Might be getting magnified by the fact that the other guys star player was a difference maker, but really frustrating he's been a complete non factor. Regardless of results, in these games, McDavid us just a complete other level to Gaudreau and I'm ok with that. But Gaudreau needs to be way way better then he has been.
2. Shaky Elliott. Very very disappointing. 2 games in and I'm already going hoping Johnson will be battling him out of our net.
3. Goo and Brodie looked horrid. Gio esoecially. If this is what we can expect from Gio, we are going to be regretting that extension much sooner than even the most sinical would have imagined.
|
I'm not worried about Gio. He started slow last year too and then ended up having a pretty great year.
Johnny is likely feeling the pressure of having this big new contract and is probably just squeezing his stick too tight. He'll be alright once he settles in. But if he doesn't get it together soon, we're definitely in trouble.
I wouldn't blame Elliott, as the Flames' D have left him hanging out to dry in both games so far. You can't give away that many breakaways and expect to win. Carey Price could have been in goal, and we'd still probably lose those games.

If the Flames can't figure things out in the first 10 games the season is effectively over.
