Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers / 7:00 PM / SN1 / SN960 / Scotiabank Saddledome
Beware, all ye who enter this thread! Large images afoot! For mobile users, scroll past the images until you see text. I've prepared a text-based lineup especially for you!
The Flames will celebrate their home opener tonight at 7:00 PM, whilst seeking revenge against the Edmonton Oilers for their 7-4 victory at the opening of Rogers Place on Wednesday. The Flames received all sorts of secondary scoring in the loss, from the likes of Michael Frolik, Alex Chiasson, Troy Brouwer, and Dennis Wideman; however, the expected big guns were nowhere to be found on the scoresheet. The Flames boast four major young stars up front in Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Sam Bennett, and Matthew Tkachuk, along with an offensive trifecta on the back end in Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie, and Dougie Hamilton. These seven big-time pieces combined for only two assists in the Wednesday loss, so you can bet they'll be looking to improve tonight.
Glen Gulutzan was lambasted by many Flames fans following his first game as head coach of Calgary, for his poor player utilization, especially on the back-end. Thankfully, he seems to have recognized his mistakes in time for tonight's rematch against Edmonton, as the lines and pairings from the 7-4 loss were thrown out the window at Thursday's morning skate in favour of more familiar, conservative combinations.
One constant remaining from the Flames' lineup on Wednesday: the starting goaltender. Brian Elliott turned in a 2015-16 Jonas Hiller-esque performance against the Oilers last game, allowing six goals and generally playing out of position and shaky the entire game. He'll look to improve on Friday, or risk being usurped for a few games by backup Chad Johnson.
Elliott can't be all to blame for the poor defensive performance on Wednesday -- the defense was also at fault. Newcomer Nicklas Grossmann had a very poor game in his Flames debut, making two poor plays with the puck directly leading to the Oilers' first two goals. It's all but guaranteed he'll sit for the next few games as he tries to find his game again. He'll be replaced in the lineup tonight by Jyrki Jokipakka, curiously scratched on Wednesday. Acquired in exchange for Kris Russell on February 29, 2016, Jokipakka is still very young with a lot to prove.
Puck drop is expected for 7:00 PM MT -- there won't be half-an-hour of pregame ceremonies before this game. Catch the broadcast on Sportsnet 1 or 360, or listen on Sportsnet 960.
PROJECTED FLAMES LINES:
13 Gaudreau - 23 Monahan - 10 Versteeg
19 Tkachuk - 93 Bennett - 36 Brouwer
79 Ferland - 11 Backlund - 67 Frolik
17 Bouma - 18 Stajan - 39 Chiasson
5 Giordano - 7 Brodie
3 Jokipakka - 27 Hamilton
29 Engelland - 6 Wideman
1 Elliott
31 Johnson
Projected Oilers lines:
TBA, because I honestly have no idea who half the people on that team are.

Call me crazy, but I'd like to see a 1a / 1b lineup as follows:
Gaudreau - Bennett - Brouwer
Tkachuk - Monahan - Versteeg

My thoughts also. I had figured that Brouwer was going to start the season on the top line.

I'll say Flames win 5-2. Gaudreau with 2 goals, Monahan and Brodie with a goal, and Bouma with the secondary scoring goal.
Russell with both Oiler goals. Both unassisted.

Finally, the images are up.
There's an extra-special theme for the player images tonight. Anyone know what it might be?
Answer: the Flames are wearing the retro alternates tonight, so everything is in retro. There will be three GDT styles (when I do them) this year:

Just by looking at what colour the lineup is, you can tell whether the Flames are at home or away -- and if they're at home, you can tell which threads they're wearing.

Great job Scorp, nice writeup.
Let's hope the Flames return the favor and beat these fools tonight.
3-1 Flames. Gaudreau, Brouwer, Giordano

Kevin is 25 years old.
While obviously not over the hill, he's hardly "very young", and I don't think we should be expecting him to find another level. It's not like he's still physically maturing or anything. He has a bit of room to grow as he has relatively little NHL experience, but that will be incremental progress, not revolutionary.
He basically is what he is.
What he is, however, is also highly underrated. He's the 4th best defenseman on the Flames in my book, and would be the 3rd best defenceman on some NHL teams.
Also, the Oilers are garbage, and the Flames should feel shame for losing to them.
Losing to Edmonton is never acceptable.

Not crazy at all. Those are our 3 best/most dynamic offensive players on the top line. Tkachuk could set up Monahan a lot as he is a great passer with vision. I think it would definitely work but I question if the scoring would be balanced enough since the 2nd line would be offensively weaker without Bennett and Brouwer. But those 2 sure would make a ton of space for Johnny to work his magic.

I'm keeping my expectations modest for tonight. 5 goals against or less, at least two special teams goals for. One less phantom penalty shot for the Oilers.

How's everyone doing out there? Is everyone ok? Everybody recover from the inevitable meltdown? Seemed like the smart thing to do yesterday was avoid this forum.
Now that the clunker game is out of the way, hopefully the team will become a little more cohesive. Sometimes you need to get embarrassed to remember where your effort and preparation level needs to be at.
I'm expecting a much more solid defensive effort, but I still expect to give up 3 goals. That being said, I think the Flames were a little unlucky to score more goals the other night, so I'm going to say 4 or 5 goals for the good guys.
Final score: 5-3 Flames.

I think Gio and Brodie will tilt the ice against McDavid, and because of that, we'll win handily. Not even worried about that third pairing - just play them against any other Oiler line and they'll do fine.
4-0 good guys.

I think Brodie in particular is the perfect d-man to shadow McDavid. His excellent skating would really nullify a lot of what McDavid tries to do. Everytime 97 is on the ice he should be greeted by the Backlund Frolik line + Brodie and Gio. Also after re-watching the game I have to say some of our physical players looked to be scared of Edmonton. The oilers went after Gaudreau and played him physically with lots of hacks and crosschecks. Asides from Tkachuk and Engelland the rest of the guys seemed to be in a way intimidated by Lucic Kassian Maroon etc. I'd like to see us play very physically against their less physical, more skilled players like Nuge Eberle and McD - without thinking of consiquences. Its not like Lucic is the best fighter in the league or something.

Great write up. I don't post that much at all and every season I tell myself to log in more and contribute. Maybe this will be the season.
I'd like to first say that I really enjoy reading this forum. You all are a well-informed community with a great sense of humour, to boot.
Secondly, I really like the look of these lines. If things click, this team has a chance to be to be really tough to play against.
Dare to dream, guys. Dare to dream!
Tonight will be a good night for those who are fans of both the Flames and the Blue Jays. What a great time to be a sports fan! Happy Friday, everyone!
