Warsaw - Anybody ever been?
The girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Warsaw in the summer and was wondering if anybody here had been and had any suggestions/tips.
Thanks!

Wasn't there a Polish dude on this forum a while ago. Michalek, or something like that?
Anyway, never been there. I had a cousin who went there though, and loved it so much that she stayed for a few years and married someone there... and that was when it was still communist. I imagine it's even better now.
It's definitely on my list of places to go when I travel to Europe.
Any particular reason for going there, other than just curiousity?

Well my girlfriend is Polish, she goes back over to visit family every once and a while, and she said that she hasn't ever actually gone to see Warsaw, but has always wanted to.
So we're planning on starting with Warsaw, then perhaps traveling elsewhere, Germany perhaps.

Yeah, I've been there. I enjoyed Krakow a lot more, and if you have some time to get down there, I'd reallly recommend it. As far as Warsaw goes, there's the obvious historic sites: Wilanow Palace, the Royal Castle, and Old Town. Pretty good night life, but I honestly don't remember the names of any of the places I went to. Some pretty good jazz clubs. Overall, it wasn't one of my favorite eastern-european cities. Krakow, Budapest and Prague are all a bit more cosmopolitian and trendy, while going north to the Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius are all great little off-the-beaten track cities to explore, and if I was going back to the region, I'd spend less time in Warsaw and more time in the countryside and up in the baltic states.

I've been to Warsaw and really enjoyed it... Can't add a whole lot as octothorp summarized nicely.. But what I found fascinating about Warsaw was the Old Town Square... There are a bunch of museums there that document the amazing rebuilding project after the War. You walk around there and it feels genuine, even though everything was re-constructed in the 50s.
Check it out, but I agree with octo... I enjoyed Krakow more, get down there if you can.

I haven't been but if I were to go I would spend a lot of time in the country checking out the historical battlegrounds and places of interest from the two world wars and, going way back, the Teutonic order.

Never been there, if you are looking for a place to visit after, check out Croatia, a friend of mine convinced me to go with him, after Costa Rica that has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. Whenever I get married thats where I am going on my honeymoon.

Hey
I have been in Warsaw several times , and I have to say that after Krakow that would be my 2nd favourite polish city.
There are a lot of things that are worth of seeing.
Take a look at these links (all in english !) , they should give you a good idea:
http://free.polbox.pl/p/psbor/ewarszaw.htm
http://www.thevisitor.pl/warszawa.php
You HAVE to go to wilanow palace, palace on the water and old town square, its just beautifull.
If you have any questions you can always PM polish dude

Thanks for everybody's help so far.
michalek, if we were to travel elsewhere afterwards, where would you suggest? Either still in Poland (but I know she's been Krakow), or in certain spots in the surrounding countries.
