Gulutzan never struck me as a very good coach, but was willing to give the benefit of the doubt, maybe Treliving saw something in him that I didn't? But man, I don't think he got a single thing right last night. Next game better not be more of the same, he is instilling zero confidence in me as a coach.

Agreed. I'm all about giving a guy time to do his thing but if thats his thing, he's ####ed.

I didn't mind Wideman's play last night. He was good on the power play (as he should be).

He needs to not be out on a four on four or in any penalty kills scenarios. He's also too slow to keep up with McDavid (but I'm sure T Mac was intentionally about that matchup).

I can't believe I'm freaking out less than all of you. It's the first game of the season. Every team gets blown out once in a while and for once, we actually have some valid reasons.

I wish we signed Nakladal.

Yeah Wideman still has his uses. But playing top 4 minutes is not one of them at this point. 3rd pairing and PP time.

Jokipakka sitting is insane.

After full panic mode, there's acceptance mode and then Patrick Nolan hopeful mode

I'm with a lot of you on this. We're already 1/82nd of the way into the season and it's pretty obvious Gulutzan is in completely over his head. This hire is disastrous.

Just have to ask yourself a few questions about Treliving to calm these worries down.

We know the man is a methodical tireless worker ... so he didn't hire a bad coach because he was too lazy to interview other people.

We know the man is process driven ... which means this wasn't a scan hockeydb and make a decision. We can probably assume (actually we've heard) that there was a pretty in depth process with systems and what ifs that helped them arrive at what they want behind the bench.

Burke doesn't know him, so that panic cycle can be skipped this time around. And even if he did we've seen enough hints lately that Treliving is going his way and not Burke's now.

So then what are we left with?

1. The process failed and they hired a dud
2. Treliving himself is a dud as he got the right guy with the wrong system.
3. It's one game

Time for a clean sweep people, a clean sweep.

Evacuate the circus, close down the pool hall. Back up the moving vans. Initiate operation nuke the Saddledome.

Man, if this is what its like after one game.

They came out and played poorly, worse things have happened.

I would have loved a win in the first game, Seriously.

But new coach, JG no practice, Versteeg very little practice, Money with very little live time in the pre season. We lost it happened, lets see if this team has character and can bounce back.

If they get hammeroski'ed next game, I can go back to watching the Stamps.

I am significantly more ok with the loss this morning than I was last night. The d pairing fiasco was explained on the fan 960 and actually makes sense in hindsight. Obviously it didn't work so adjustments need to be made.

The one thing I can't get over is the penalty shot and even more so, the official who called it. Correct me if I am wrong but when Gio was boarded we saw the center ice official call it with a late whistle after the guy right in front of the play didn't raise his arm. This is the same official who called the god awful penalty shot.

I have little issue with the no call on Johny as long as it is consistent throughout the game and the officiating was actually very good last night with the exception of the 1 guy. He deserves league punishment if it was in fact the same guy not calling the Gio boarding and then calling the McDavid penalty shot.

What was the explanation? Just curious.

That sequence of the non call on Gaudreau directly followed by the penalty shot call on McDavid should be in a training video for NHL officials.

Are we going to get screwed with refs every time Wideman plays?

Yes and as a matter of fact that was retroactively added to the CBA. There is a slight chance the whole team played like preseason crap but a good persecution complex will be far more fun to foster than any analysis of their play.

What was the explanation?

And I was hoping once things didn't work out in the first we would see adjustments. I am glad by the end of the game Grossmann was under 12min played but Wideman saw way too much ice. The last thing I wanted to see was a coach who refuses to adjust to the game situation.

My biggest issue by far from Gulutzan is not the Defense pairings. It's not the bad line matchup (he never once chose Backlund's line to play against McDavid).

It's the complete apathy shown from behind the bench when Gaudreau was mauled without a call, while McDavid was awarded a phantom penalty shot. Hartley would have taken a bench penalty for that, and you know what, you need to get some emotion going.

It's one game, but a lot of these issues seen last night should have been tinkered out of the lineup during preason instead of using the preseason to give tryouts to the likes of Higgins. The last game of the preseason should have been our full starting available lineup at the time.

We are playing 3 games in 4 nights with little time to adjust, and it's a long season, but as we saw last year, it can quickly be lost in the first few weeks.
