True. But if he takes a shot and there's a big rebound or shoots wide the same thing happens. A forward needs to cover.

It can't be the thinking that we put one big, dumb, slow defender on each D pair to fight off Edmonton's big, dumb, slow forwards, right?

Cuz it was McDavid's speed that burned us all night long.

God I wish this organization would wake up and smell the coffee that big slow and smashy doesn't mean jack if you're losing on the scoreboard.

Only good thing I read when they signed Grossman was "Well at least he'll sit in the press box instead of taking minutes from a youngster" then he plays and Kulak sits

Really what is it with this organization? Every year they lose in Anaheim regardless of the roster players and coaches and they almost always play horrendous in the opener. It took barely a minute before they spotted the Oilers a 1-0 lead like it was a monkey they wanted to get off their back as they just couldn't wait to start the opener misery. I just don't get why this team is stuck in these ruts of repeating their constant failures over and over.

I think the Oilers had a slight advantage going in given a) the emotion of a home opening in a new building, b) Gaudreau, Monahan and Versteeg being united for all of 24 hours, Gaudreau coming in cold, and the trio not having practiced together. and c) the Flames' best defence pairing being split up when both are far better together

The officiating and to a lesser extent bounces just pushed the whole thing over the edge. Elliott didn't help, though. Grossmann was a liability, but can be sent to the press box.

Specialty teams look much improved.

This. Tkachuk will be the most hated guy in the NHL by the quarter pole. He'll also score 25 goals this year. Put it on the board!

And yet I'll take both if they're sitting in the top 16 come mid April.

There is no excuse for Engelland having more ice in a game than Hamilton, especially one where the Flames are trailing 95% of the game.

Should have changed out Elliott after the 2nd goal.
Word from my Blues fan friends is when he is bad he is really bad. Makes you forget how good he can be other games.
Should have sat Grossman after the first.

Forget game one and move on. Not impressed with Oilers. We will finish above them this season.

He can when he slams it directly into the body of a sliding defender. Make a better play with the puck or stay your useless ass back on the blue line.

Sure but I think they are going to have to start winning games in Anaheim if they ever want to start thinking about winning their division.

Wideman's best moment was lifting Eberle's stick to prevent another goal, and he scored on the PP.

Still doesn't make up for how utterly overmatched he was for pretty much the entire rest of the game. The NHL game is passing Wideman by.

And Grossmann? GTFO...just GTFO, now!

As someone else mentioned the key to Gulutzan's style of coaching will be next game's pairings.

If he's stubborn and uses the same pairs I might be sick to my stomach.

If he makes logical adjustments, then there's hope.
