This team had a bad training camp. Their 2 star forwards were out due to injury and holdout. They looked invisible tonight. Elliott was terrible and no better than last seasons awful goaltending.

I didn't feel the flames got outplayed at all but they looked rusty and the refs definitely called a lot against. The turning point was the no call on Johnny and the penalty shot for McDavid.

Let's get them Friday but this team needs some work

Those pairings win tonight IMO, even with the horrid officiating and bad goals.

Well that's what a Calgary season opener looks like every year. Elliot was given the chance to #### the bed and he took it. Get it over with early. I see him bouncing back nicely on Friday. Now this whole defence pairing experiment can #### off thank you very much.

We lost the game so we gave to make #### up to try and slam the Oil, looks really bad on us. We lost the game, just take our lumps and move on.

Honestly that looks fantastic... and painfully obvious.

Grossmann single-handedly caused the first two goals against. First with that horrendous turnover, then by jumping up way to far into the play leaving Dougie to defend a 2-on-1.

Then you have that astounding non-call on Gaudreau followed right after with the call on a non-penalty to McDavid, gifting him a penalty shot.

Eberle scores an empty net to finally sink it.

If you take away the penalty shot and EN goals, we lose 5-4. Replace Grossmann and we possibly could have won this thing 4-3.

However, if wishes were horses and all that. Hopefully they'll be better next game.

Honestly, nothing is really registering with me beyond how terrible Elliott was. It's like trying to spot individual birds in a flock flying directly in front of the sun.

He needs to be a LOT better.
It was probably Johnnys worst game I ever watched from him. He missed two easy goals and passed the puck to Oilers and created breakouts for Edmonton multiple times. Flames didn't send a dman through the centre for a pass like with Hartley.

Brian Elliott is going to learn that 30 shots in St. Louis is not 30 shots in Calgary.

Sure he let in a couple softies, but he also made some damn fine saves.

Top line wasn't good, I saw a few glimpses of hope. Let's hope the chemistry starts clicking, considering they've only practiced with each other once so far.

Edit: also surprised we still managed 40 shots some how

I'm not really sure what I watched there...but we're supposed to lose the season opener anyhow, right? Right??

Elliott had a .778 sv% and a 6.10gaa tonight. I hope he got that out of his system because I think we've all seen enough of that over the last year.

He should know going into the season that the Gio-Brodie pairing is, arguably, the best pairing in the entire ####ing league.

I've watched a lot of Elliott. He's not a sound technical goaltender. Nor is he very athletic. He doesn't read the play that well either.

Obviously just my opinion. But it's not like tonight's game has anything to do with my opinion, it's just one more data point.

Will be interesting to see how he does in a much less structured environment.

I'm more interested to know what led him to those pairings randomly right before the season. It's mind boggling.

I have a feeling that's how he came out of nowhere to get the job. He's one of those thinkers that has a lot of creative ideas but as we know a lot of creative ideas sound a lot better in theory than implementation. Hawks are 0-1 so we don't need to start jumping off cliffs as it's essentially extended preseason right now but unfortunately for a team that will need every point they can get to contend for a playoff spot handing over these early points hurt.
