That's glass half full. Half empty is that Wideman, Engelland and Grossman will be too, if and when Grossman plays.

Grossman is the type of defenceman that the Flames need. Nakladal isn't.
I'm hoping he can bring something similar to what Hannan did a few seasons back.

And guess which current Flames coach had a front row seat of that?

this is all money ...
his AAV is 75k cheaper than Kulak, and 50K cheaper than Wotherspoon, and the Flames are up against it.

Bingo, Bingo.
You can't get a cheaper player than Grossman. Fullstop.

Weird the splitting of Gio and Brody, BUT I have faith, and it's a new system where maybe their talents are better split... See what happens...
I thought Grossman was decent in the preseason... he made some good initial break-out passes, never panicked with the puck, and didn't look out of place... good depth signing... that being said I liked Kulak and his speed better, although remembering he's still our young guy and not going anywhere other than maybe AHL to dominate...

My guess is the new pairings don't even last a full game. Just doesn't make any sense

Hope Gio, Brodie and Hamilton can carry their pair and play 20mins a night? Doesn't make sense though as you want Gio and Brodie with more than 20 a night.

So you're saying it will be like any other game where coaches change pairings and line matchups on the fly depending on a variety of in game criteria such as penalties, injuries, icings and general compete level and quality of play of individual players?
Bizarre. Based on this thread I would've thought these lines and pairings were set in stone until the end of time.
Ahh, the heady days of when Bollig was guaranteed a roster spot because of a love-fest from management. Wait, wasn't that less than 24 hours ago?
Cheezus.

Grossman hits stuff.
Our sma####ude rating is way up today because of this signing
..seriously, he's a 6/7 d-man. Not much to worry about on a league minimum deal.

That all comes down to special teams and the odd double shifting of Brodie/Hamilton/Giordano.
Gio, and Brodie will make up the ice time on the PP & PK to get them above 20 minutes per game.
Hamilton & Wideman likely gets some extra ice-time on the PP.
Jokipakka/Engelland/Grossman will get some extra ice-time on the PK.
Think the goal is to have one of the big 3 on the ice at all times, and also having a better mix of puck mover + defensive d-man on each pair.

8 to start with, at least for the initial roster submission. Afterwards, my guess is we'll see Kulak assigned and Bollig recalled.

Whoever said this organization is too hesitant to allow its young players to play, I fully agree. It seems impossible for players to go from the bubble to the NHL roster. We'll eternally sign over the hill vet depth, apparently on the pretext that they'll make fewer mistakes, but that's just not the case.
And if I have the choice between Grossmann getting blown past five times a game and Kulak coughing the puck up 5 times a game, I'll take the latter, thankyou. At least Kulak has a chance to learn and grow. Grossmann will only get worse, and he's already terrible.

Maybe. Also possible Hamilton has not earned the trust of new coaches yet so he is on bottom pairing.

Seriously?
Monahan
Gaudreau
Tkachuck
Bennett
Ferland
Bouma
Hamilton
50% of the forwards are young kids.
Which of the young forwards didn't get a fair shake? Shinkaruk did nothing. Poirier did nothing. Klimchuk did nothing. Jankowski was okay but could use more seasoning (and when I say more, I mean more than 6 AHL games). Hathaway is the only one who probably earned a spot, but he lost it to another youngish type guy in Chiasson.
Brodie
Hamilton
Jokipakka
50% of the defense core is young.
Grossman is about depth. It's about having 8 NHL calibre defensemen (including Kulak) to call upon in case of injuries that always happen. Wotherspoon is not an NHL defenseman, Culkin is not an NHL defenseman, Kylington and Andersson are not NHL defensemen yet.

750k worth of professional popcorn eating. I think he'll be a great practice guy too so that's about it. Perhaps next year when the Engellands, Widemans and whoever else are gone, will be the time for Kulak, Andersson and Kylington and the rest.
