I wouldn't be too concerned over an article where he writes that "moms want to mother" Johnny. All of it seems over-the-top...

They will need to sign a goalie too. At least one of those pieces will need to come from within the organization IMO for it all to work.

I hate the term. 1 to 4, or 7 to 8 would have been better.
But the cap hit is fine for now.
Someone just needs to get Johnny to marry a Calgary girl.

I thought that too. A shout out to his teammates, the fans, his agent and his family.
Emphasis on just wanting to play and (probably) not to let the team down.
But no mentioning of the guys upstairs who are signing him to get paid all this money. Probably a little sourness after they pressed the $6.75 M issue right until the bitter end, making him force the agent's hand.

Yeah they are going to have to start filling more of the complimentary pieces internally. They can't afford to hand out more deals like Brouwer and Frolik. I'm OK with those deals but to make this work some of the other prospects have to start to come through.

So Johnny's contract won't be expired but he will be eligible for an extension before the next CBA expires? Also a lockout could burn his final year of his deal like Iggy.
Johnny may want to sign another contract if owners try and inevitably squeeze the players further

I think the #4 d-man will come from the system (looking at Kulak, Kylington or Andersson a couple seasons from now, and hopefully one breaking in full time next season) but I think they'll have to make one more Brouwer/Frolik type deal to round out the top 6. It's good to have a mix of veteran and young players, and the scale still tips toward the younger side, so a reliable vet that can provide top 6 production should imo be on the menu for next offseason. Also keeping in mind that a depth guy or two may be lost to the expansion draft (like a Frolik).

Great deal by Treliving, definitely fair value in my mind. Would have loved 8 years at the ask that was rumored, but 6 years is still ba long time.
Now let's get us a scoring title, a presidents trophy, and maybe a silver cup.

Outside of signing a goaltender I don't see the Flames as big players in free agency for a while. No room left for overpaying depth talent.

A term of 1 to 4 would just mean a 8+ AAV on his next contract. I don't see how that is better than a 6 year deal for $6.75 AAV. Plus signing a 1-4 year deal would open him up for offer sheets and arbitration.

If this was your first thought, Jiri, then this encapsulates everything that is wrong with modern fandom. And I know you weren't the only one to think this.
Honestly, the first thought should have been relief and excitement that we have one of the game's best young players in the line-up on Wednesday.

This deal should allow the Flames to keep Bennett and Tkachuk long term as well likely under $7M as well.

I'm happy believe me.
I just think the organization has to start being smarter about asset management in the long run.
This team has been shallow asset wise for decades, and one of the reasons is they continually mis-time when to move on from players. When it is all said and done it may well end up being that they got nothing out of the last core of this team: Iginla, Kipper, Bouwmeester, Regehr. The only hope of ANY return from those 4 guys right now is Klimchuk and Poirier.
That's grim.
I wanted at least 7. Happy with 6. Wanted 7.
I don't see what's wrong with that.

Let's cross that bridge when we come to it. No telling what the market will be like then.

Really happy that they got this done today.
Just thought I would post this from the doom and gloom thread:

Yeah, no doubt Treliving flew to New Jersey and stayed there for 3 days (and counting) in order to tell them that he hasn't moved at all from his prior position.
Sounds totally plausible.
