Johnny got $40.5M over six years. If he got $58M over 8 years, it means that years seven and eight on and eight year deal would be worth $8.75M per year, compared to the contract he signed. I'm excited he's signed, and if both parties want to spend $8.75M per year in six years, I'm sure they will. If Johnny isn't worth it at that time, the Flames aren't having to take a crippling cap hit. If he puts up huge numbers, they'll have no problem paying him that type of money at that point.
This is a great deal, in my opinion.

If the Flames win a cup in those six years, Johnny stays for another contract.
If they don't, he's gone.
Which is fair.

Perhaps a gentleman agreement before, but he can't formally sign the extension until July 1st, 2021 of his final year. The draft is usually around the 3rd weekend of June.

At first glance, looks like the window might blow wide open next season after we dump most of our dead weight UFAs, as long as BT can spend the money wisely to fill whatever holes in the lineup that remain.

Home run deal by the club. Six years is a long time in hockey lifetimes and the AAV is fair.
It would have been awesome if him and Monahan signed identical deals though.

Super happy about this. I hate to admit it, but I read through most of the other threads. I was optimistic he was going to sign, but the paranoia was contagious. I was starting to worry this weekend. Good thing I'm not a negotiator.
It's a good deal for the team and good for Johnny. You can't say it's his last contact here. Nobody has a clue what will happens in 5 years time. Johnny doesn't even know himself. If the team does well and he enjoys Calgary, he will sign another contract. In the meantime, we're all going to enjoy the ride...and championships, hopefully. Congrats, Johnny!

For sure on the sentiment about 6 years being a lifetime. Take a look at what was going on in the NHL six years ago and who the hot teams and players were. If the Flames are going to be serious Cup contenders with this group of players, its going to be within the next 6 years.

video from Bob McKenzie:

Johnny opted to sign at Flames number rather than start missing games.
Flames wanted 7 years but comprimised to 6 years
Flames wanted a similar deal to Monhan and didn't want to go over Giordano's $6.75 mil

Johnny and Mony will meet twin sisters in Calgary and live here happily ever after... Oh, and when the oceans rise on the east coast Johnny will relocate his whole family here 😀

Hard to really say that. We don't even know what the new CBA will look like at that time.
