$950K for 16-17, not $925K.

Well what would you have them do? Basically offering him up for free, to give him a chance to play, but if he's not claimed, likely means there is not a trade market for him, so there really is no better spot for him than our press box if he hasn't earned a spot. Much rather he be there then take a developmental spot in Stockton.
Edit: Did not realize we'd save cap space sending him down. Definitely changes my thoughts on a potential re-assignment.

Stupid question of the day: why do we get cap relief by sending down Bollig? I thought with the new CBA that the cap hit counted regardless (at least a portion thereof). Is there a special clause for players with a cap hit under 1M?

One thing is for sure, the Flames didn't cheap out on making it an interesting preseason. Still lots of question marks on who will play this season.
Lets hope this preseason roster spot competition translates into a good start, regardless of who is in the line up.

Just no more use for a player like Bollig in the NHL anymore. Sucks for him but that's the direction the league is going. You have to be able to play as well now too.

You can bury the portion of a contract that is the league minimum + $375K. Bollig's contract exceeds that value. So if he gets assigned to Stockton, instead of having his entire cap hit of $1.25M against the cap, it would be reduced by $950K to a $300K cap hit.

Are you sure?
I thought only $950k of a player's salary could be buried. So, hypothetically, sending Bollig down and giving his spot to Hathaway, the Flames' cap saves a net $260k.
Bollig to AHL; Hathaway to NHL
$300k (Bollig's $1.25M - $950k AHL bury) + $690k (Hathaway's salary) = $990k cap hit
Hathaway to AHL; Bollig to NHL
= $1.25M (Bollig's salary) cap hit

I wrote something similar in the D Jones thread, but nothing makes me laugh mire than the fan reaction in threads like this. We have thousands of pages of Gaudreau panic on this board, people concerned that Burke might be alienating Johnny, people concerned that posts supporting the Flames trying to drive a good cap hit will make Johnny feel unappreciated by fans. Then we have threads like this with 80% of posts celebrating what is probably a ####ty day for a player on our team.
For the record, I don't think any of this matters to the signing of Gaudreau, I don't think what we post in here makes a difference. But nothing highlights the biggest down side of playing in Calgary or any Canadian market for the players more than the reactions in a thread like this. Johnny probably likes Brandon to boot, yah please hurry up and show me where I can sign up for 8 years of playing in front of this group..... as long as we're winning or I never slump, should be ok right?

$950K made available by assigning Bollig. The relief would be lessened should another player be recalled to replace him on the roster, of course.

These quotes are putting it kind.
“We have to be fair with Bolls. That trade probably surprised him and even shocked him a bit, and it took him time,” Flames head coach Bob Hartley said of the winger who’s donned a letter during some of pre-season games. “He’s a great team guy and everything, but towards the end of the year, we saw the real Brandon Bollig.”
That would be the one Bollig believes himself to be now.
“Maybe a different focus, a different attitude, coming in,” Bollig said. “I don’t have anything distracting me or the shock of a trade. Everything went smoothly for me as far as getting acclimated to coming here and having a place set up. Everything seems to be smoother — the transition — and that lets you concentrate on hockey on and off the ice and everything that matters.”

If only the Hawks had some cap room to spare I imagine they would take a flyer on him.

So sounds like he was shocked by a trade, took some time to get used to his new team then turned it around? Yup, string him up!

Trust me. He was upset about the trade, just bought a place after signing a new deal with the Hawks, arrived with a pouty attitude and finally stopped around the midway point of the season.
