This is how you choose a captain. Not give it to Ekblad just because.

Exactly. Keep it away from Ekblad and Barkov because they simply don't need that pressure.

Captains should be veterans

Totally okay with this choice as captain; he's a veteran that can share his leadership and experience with the kids - which is exactly what you would want from a captain. There may be more talented players on the roster, but I'd rather get mentorship and motivation from a 35-year-old than a 19-year old.

I'll give people a pass because he's played exclusively in the east in a depth role, but he's an extremely effective player and one of those guys that can do all the little things that change momentum. He's had either Thornton or AHL scrubs on his wings since he's been in Florida, yet his line is always solid defensively and puts pressure on the forecheck. One of the better shot suppression players out there.

And yes, by the time McKenzie moves on in 3 years time when his contract expires, I imagine they'll have primed Ekblad for the captaincy. Not likely to be Barkov, he's too quiet.

I'm sure when Flames named Todd Simpson captain back in the day, fans of other teams thought the same thing.

As long as he has captain qualities he's a worthy captain

Also, looking at their list of historical captains, it's all pretty underwhelming. That might be the most underwhelming "Captain's List" in the league.

Be honest, you double checked the spelling of his name when you typed that out.

I'm also surprised how many people don't know who MacKenzie is. Is it meant to be a jab? It's obvious he isn't a star player or anything, but there is definite name recognition.

I'm also surprised by how old he is. I thought he was a few years younger. Like late 20s early 30s.

Only because we are so used to spelling Derek "Deryk"...

I barely know who the Florida Panthers are, let alone one of their plugs.

Due to the fact you have a hard time keeping up with the last decade of Oilers plugs?

He actually only became an NHL regular in 2010-2011, so he made the league late.

We played Columbus four times a year until the lockout half season. Even a fairly casual fan should have seen him a few times.
