this is my take not to do with Francis's comments:
The way out now is too ignore the long term deal.... 3.5 x 2.
Moves Johnny to the point that he is closer to getting back east, better bargaining position in the summer of 2018.
It also gives the Flames a higher degree of certainty of what is best for the Flames..... Thachuk will have have establish his potential. Bennett will either be a a #1C or at least establish his top end .
Right now is a unique time where a team has so much potential and so little certainty.
In 2 years the impact ranking of these 6 guys could be very different from where it is today where Gaudreau is #2 (behind Brodie). In 2 years Gaudreau could be 5/6 on this team.
Both sides have said they're doing a long term deal. Over and over again.
McKenzie: Gaudreau & Flames are closing gap, but it's still a considerable gap.

I have not used it the word in 15 years, in fact I am hearing it less and less, which is good. When someone uses it, I put less credence in their statement.

Irregardless of the affect of everything discombobulated I've read in these threads, a copacetic (copascetic?) Johnny would of excepted fewer dollars if it meant he wouldn't of played farther from home.
(I'm not clever enough to come up with something better, but I'm sure some wit will.....)
The Following User Says Thank You to taxbuster For This Useful Post:
-Who is the villain here, he thinks it, Lewis Gross(Johnny's agent) and Tom Rowe(Florida Panthers GM for signing the Ekblad contract, he called Tom Rowe a "stupid son of a gun").
-It is a good thing that Brad Trevling went to talk to Johnny directly, so Johnny is not getting filtered information through his agent(which he thinks Johnny is not getting).
-Johnny's camp is pointing to Ekblad contract(says GM's around the leauge may not be happy with Tom Rowe). Johnny's camp is saying forwards are more marketable and more dynamic.
-People will forget, what happens here, Jarome Iginla missed 3 games coming off his entry level contract and it a blip on the map but people forgot about.
-Johnny's camp is saying look at Vladimir Tarasenko's contract but Eric Francis says that was a different situation, Vladimir Tarasenko was RFA and could get offer sheeted.
-The annual Eric Francis pizza pig out, is October 19, all you can eat Pizza at Cowboys, $50 a ticket.
I'll add:
- No doubt in his mind that Russell will be a Flame as soon as Johnny signs (wrong)
- Treliving is in no way to blame for the situation.
- Said that the Flames never expected to have to pay a dime over 7 (which he seemed to agree with)
- Called Ekblad's contract '####-eyed'
- Thinks the offer at 6.5 is reasonable because Giordano makes only 6.75 (Gio Cap)
- Said the gap is 1.5M, and that the Flames offer is ~6.5M, then continued to insinuate that Johnny's could be 8.5M
- Said Johnny's ask of 8.5M is ridiculous because that's Stamkos money (ignoring that his not his ask unless he can't do math)
- Said that Giordano and maybe Elliot might be more valuable than Gaudreau.
Francis is clearly acting as a mouthpiece for management, and it's very obvious that he sides with the team.
I still don't understand the narrative that Johnny is being unreasonable for not taking a discount when both Monahan and Giordano did not. Maybe Monahan should have taken the Barkov deal? And Gio should have taken 6M? That saves 1.25M right there. And then maybe Johnny would feel more inclined to take less than 7. But they didn't. They both got on the high range (when considering term). So why is Johnny's agent the bad guy for asking full price?
But still -- there's more to negotiations than one-liners and single motives. There's a lot more at stake than just a few million dollars. There's the future of your team for the distant future -- that's not something easily gambled.

Regarding Burke, I'm not concerned about his ability to negotiate. I'm concerned with his ability to build a collaborative environment for discussion. He is a divisive individual who can be careless with his words and is quick to draw lines.

We want a win win scenario with a player like Johnny. Burke's has a pretty well documented history of being rude, offensive, and combative. That's not the best way to build a relationship. Burke seems to see the world as a zero sum game.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I think I've ever read. Johnny has shown no indication of being anything less than a 75+ point player. There is no scenario where he is our 5/6th best player in 2 years lol.
It's more likely he wins back to back scoring titles than it is he becomes our 6th best player.

On the flip side, Johnny hired an agent with what some would call a poor reputation. Johnny's agent isn't doing anything to build the relationship either.

I actually agree with some of your points and think the Gaudreau side isn't being unreasonable, but then you have to say something like this.
Francis is pretty much the bane of management most of the time and usually only tries to stoke animosity. So much so, I am surprised they haven't outright banned him from access to the team. His opinions are his, make no mistake. If for once they align with management, it is nothing more than a coincidence.
