I'd hope the Flames pick up either Frk or Galiev. That first line RW spot is not going to be helped by any of the options currently available to the team.

But two waiver guys are good enough for that spot? Sorry don't see it. I'd argue Shinkaruk is just as good if not better then both those options.

Not sure what happened to Galiev. He was a can't miss prospect when he played for the Saint John Seadogs in the Q. I'd be more than willing to take a chance on him.

Given the situation at RW, it would be downright neglectful to not put a claim in for this kid.
If he's not working out in a month or two, just toss him back on waivers. Low risk, high reward.

Not sure how it is neglectful. He does not really have that much offensive upside and I do not think he is a solid Defensive player either.
He wasn't can't miss in the Q either. He was a PPG player there. That is not that's great for a high scoring league.
People often overrate Russians after a good WJC. He is a sime a dozen tweener NHLer that is already 24. Destined for KHL next season

I wouldn't be expecting much but we have a wide open spot at the position. Like I said, low risk/high reward and dump him if it doesn't work out. I can appreciate what you're saying though I just think he might be worth the half court shot.

Galiev had 34 points in 17 games while Leading the Seadogs to a Memorial Cup. This kid had big expectations.

As an overager in the Q. Nothing he has done since has shown him to be a good NHL player

Like Kylington, Andersson, Hickey or maybe Kulak? I can't see anyone else having enough value to bring in someone much better than Galiev. I would rather hold onto those guys tbh. We still don't know which one will work out (if any) and we will need to keep the pipeline on D as full as possible because there is no one besides the big three under contract beyond this year.

I actually agree. Unfortunately, with Shinkaruk being in Stockton, that's not an option available at the moment.
Claiming either of them would at least add to the scarcity we have at the RW position.

What are you talking about? He never played in the Q as an overager. His final season in the Q was 19 years old at the end of it. He only played 20 games that season because he injured his wrist in Capitals training camp and required surgery. He missed 3/4 of the season and took a while to get going when he came back and still put up 20 points on 20 games. By the time the playoffs rolled around he was back in game shape and got 34 points in17 games.
Stop looking at HockeyDB stats to get the full picture. This is a 6 foot 1 right winger with scoring pedigree. Given we have no one that stepped up in the preseason to claim our RW spot, he's definitely worth a shot given it costs nothing. Not sure what our obsession with Shinkaruk is. He's on his second basement dwelling team and he still can't claim a spot with a golden opportunity gift-wrapped to him.

Thought it was his overage year.
Regardless. He hasn't one good playoff run under his belt in four years of USHL/QMJHL. Since then he has shown zero offensive upside for the NHL. May as well just keep Shinkaruk up as he hasn't shown more offensive upside than Galiev has

Galiev is worth a shot, but given the Flames current cap restraints, I don't see a claim in this teams future.

He had 34 points in 17 games when the Seadogs won the memorial cup and he missed 75% of the season with wrist surgery. 2 ppg is not a good playoff run?
The season he missed was the season player rack up stats in the CHL. He would have cleared 100 points that year probably and played for Russia at the WJHC if not for that injury at Capitals training camp.

Good claim by Carolina. They made a similar smart claim with Nestrasil a year or two ago as well.

Sorry it's a typo. I meant he has had one good playoff run. He is not a guy you pick up

A few teams interested in Frk. Carolina was 13th in waiver priority. So we know it wasn't TOR, EDM, VAN, CLB, CGY, WIN, ARI, BUF, MON, COL, NJ, OTT, or DET.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Hearing there may have been as many as three waiver claims on Frk but CAR had priority based on last season's final standings.
