I didn't say his pathetic attempt at humour was relevant to (Gaudreau) negotiations. I said Burke is an embarassment and that this unfortunate "hookers" remark he made to 21st century law students is indicative of his poor judgement. I have little confidence in Burke. Which is relevant to the discussion to the last few posts in which he was mentioned.
It would not surprise me if he shot off his mouth to some stranger on an airplane, about anything.
Now, you claimed you've heard worse remarks in public from Flames brass, worse than Burke's "hookers" joke. I challenged you to provide an example. Should I assume your lazy deflection means you aren't able?

I had Burke at UBC Law in the 1990s.
My impression was that we was fiercly loyal and respectful of his players.

I actually wasn't the one who said that.
Should I assume something based on your lazy reading? I'd be tempted to assume you're probably prone to snap judgements and name calling instead of a fair and measured response.

Current Flames roster cap hit gives them $6.633m in space. Cap Friendly doesn't include Vey or Kulak. General Fanager doesn't include Kulak or $630k for cap overage from last season.

I'm not quite sure how this works; in that case Smid would have to be put on LTIR for Gaudreau to sign his 7M+ contract, correct?

You're right, it was another guy who made that claim. You piped up for him, hence my mistake. No name calling, btw. Except Burke. But he dishes a lot, so he can expect some brickbats, surely.

They can send eligible contracts to the AHL on the 11th and recall them on the 12th. Vey, Bennett and Kulak could be paper transactions to the AHL.

Between this thread and the other major Gaudreau contract threads we're nearing 6000 posts of this... I don't know what to call it anymore

With $6.63M in cap space, they could send Vey down to free up an additional $700,000. That would give them $7.33M in space. If they signed Gaudreau to a $7.3M deal, they'd be within $33,000 or so of the cap.
If I understand the math correctly (and I'm not sure I do), they could then put Smid on LTIR and it would allow them to exceed the cap by the value of Smid's contract less the amount they're under the cap on the day he's put on LTIR.
So, if they're under the cap by $33,000, and Smid's cap hit is $3.5M, they would be able to exceed the cap by about $3.467M.

My understanding is that if Smid is placed on LTIR after the initial rosters they can exceed the cap by up to his 3.5 million but if placed on LTIR before that they get locked in to a set amount they can exceed by because it would be accepted that he has been replaced. I could be wrong though, the NHL did not make this easy to understand

LTIR is like a payday loan: you really don't want to rely on it to balance your books.
