Last I heard, Canadians were passing on free trips to Tractorland.

Poll people around the continent and ask them what would they rather do, travel to AB to see WEM or the Stampede.

I don't know why you, are other Calgarians want to fight so hard and not give recognition to Alberta's number one tourist attraction. Obviously something must be attractive for people across the country to visit it.

North Calgary Mall will not even be comparable to South Edmonton common, let alone WEM
I'm an Edmontonian

I go there probably twice a month... limited stuff to do in Edmonton...

And no, I don't shop at FCUK or this Europa Boulovard...

I don't do alot of shopping for clothes, I guess you do

Good lord I can't believe anyone is arguing this. The mall is a dump. A big dump, to be sure, but still a dump. The people that I know in Edmonton realize it's a dump, just like any sensible Calgarian recognizes that the Stampede midway is a dump, and for many of the same reasons -- it's outdated, cheesy, cheap and overhyped by the locals.

And besides, it's a mall. Why anyone would defend a shopping mall like it's a member of the family is beyond me. Do you really want to attach the identity of the entire city to an overgrown shopping centre? Wow -- they have a Tommy Hilfiger store? Well golly gee, look at that.

Well, honestly, they would rather go to Banff or Lake Louise.

They were passing on free trips because they

a) Didn't believe the trip was real

b) Could not change plans within a week before the prize weekend

Go ahead, make that poll. Not a chance the Stampede wins, considering there's a fair/carnival in every city. Outside Alberta, nobody gives two hoots about K-days/Stampede (other than Farmers).

good point, forgot about the Mtns. Makes the claim that it is the #1 tourist attraction in Ab even funnier.

You dont see a difference between a downtown that is always dead, and a downtown that slows down at night? Calgary has some great downtown shopping and entertainment destinations, and most of its local night spots are all in the inner city. In Edmonton you have to go across the valley to even get a sniff of nightlife.

The appellant, Ikea Limited (“Ikea”), is a furniture retailer which carries on its business through retail outlets which it owns or leases throughout Canada. In 1985, Ikea entered into a 10-year lease of premises at the West Edmonton Mall (the “Mall”), with an option to extend the lease for a further 10 years. The lease provided for a base rent, payable in monthly instalments, plus a percentage rent based on sales. In an agreement dated six days after the original lease, Ikea became entitled to receive a TIP of $2,650,000 from the Mall.

There were 2 Bay's, one closed down in favour of SilverCity Famous theaters.
There you go...Silver City didn't need to expand, they could walk into Canada's biggest revenue retia store, who felt it not profitable to run two locations anymore.

Quote:
There still are major dept stores in there. No less than the ones before.
See Bay, above. Also, a Candian Tire was once there, and pulled out, too.

Quote:
Chinatown wing was added recently.
At the expense of what? The Canadian Tire was around that area back in the day..but pulled out.

Quote:
Name these chains that pulled out

Since 2003, the mall has attracted an increasing number of retailers including American Eagle Outfitters, Abercrombie & Fitch (2006), French Connection UK, Hollister Co., Old Navy, Tommy Hilfiger, Swarovski, bebe, BCBG, Lacoste, and Zara.

Go to European boulovard, and you have all these upper class stores (Urban, etc.)
As I said, quality factors in too. The old West Ed didn't have a payday loan,/bail bond place before, either. Or, for that matter, a big bingo hall. Where did that Playdium go?

Yes, dolphins have gone - for good reason. They were replaced with more ''mall-friendly'' sea lions, which have regular full shows.
Well, yes, for good reason the Dolphins got "replaced" because they died.

Of course if you go once a year, you'll eventually get bored of it. That's not what it's for - it's a tourist mall

The number of visitors has increased significantly
Since when? My links above show exactly the opposite.

What happened is, over the last 10 years, with the Oilers and Eskimos success and the Flames missing the playoffs, Stampeders as for the most part, celler dwellers, changed your viewpoint on Edmonton. It made you jealous, just like many Flames fans, and thus, try to put a negative spin to everything Edmonton.

Admit it - almost every one of your posts re: Edmonton are negative.
As soon as you start bringing in useless arguments like that, it pretty much shows you maturity.
Main point being, the mall was a whole lot better 20 years ago then it is now. Its turned into a white elephant that many residents of Edmonton that I know, have no use for, other then to go once a month when some cousin comes in and wants to go to the water park.

The typical North American suburban inclosed shopping mall is dying, a trend have been going on for almost a decade. Big Box retailers and other retail concepts are replacing them.

If the WEM is renting out space for teen sockhops, that's an indication of just how much the per footage rent has bottomed out.

My guess is that the push to diversify the property in the planned expansion is an effort to modernize, the end result being the eventual bulldozing of the unsightly, unprofitable portions.

I hate the Stampede more than anyone, but even Im surprised about how many people here in NY know about the Stampede. As much as i thought it was a local thing, it truly does put Calgary on the map for a lot of people.

Everywhere I travel to work (around the world, people find out I'm from Cgy and many have said that they know someone who went to the stampede and they want to make plans to go. I'm not a big stampede fan, but I'm sure it has better recognition than the mall.

So do we have a ikea bet Smyth?
