I would take a PPG center plus a 1st Rounder for a PPG winger.

I'm a very disappointed this team is already at a stage where they can't sign their best player because of salary cap issues. I was hoping Treliving would be a little better with salary cap management. When you consider the relative young ages of the team's best players and the amount of plugs in the bottom 6 forwards and bottom pairing defense it's alarming g to already be at the stage of salary cap trouble. IMO this is a black mark on the GM's record.

They can afford to spend on him, they don't want to over pay. Big difference.

This is in no way a salary cap issue. The Flames can go 10% over the cap right now which gives them somewhere around 14 million dollars they can play with until Tuesday at which time they IR Smid and and have 10 million real dollars in space.
Its a negotiation. A business deal. No more and no less.

Treliving should threaten to trade Johnny to the Islanders.
Johnny would not feel safe riding the subway to Brooklyn for games and practices.
He'll accept Treliving's final offer for sure.

imho you're so wrong.. Johnny is a heck of a talent but the Islanders would lose that deal. I would say this is such an unrealistic offer but...welll...they are the islanders

No LTIR cap relief unless they are at the cap. It's not as simple as getting space for putting a guy on LTIR.

GeneralFanager shows 7.9M in cap space. Can someone explain where the 6.6M being mentioned here is coming from?

Overheard at the gym today that Johnny is in it only for the money and not the love of the game. Anyways, I thought it was interesting that that type of sentiment is out there to perhaps more casual fans.

That's not really how it works. Assuming the Flames want to maximize Smid's LTIR exemption they have 2 options:
1) Get as close to $73M as possible with Smid as part of the opening day roster and then place him on LTIR the 1st day of the season.
2) Get as close to $76.5M as possible (upper limit + Smid's cap hit) and put him on LTIR on the last day of training camp.
Option 1 relies on Gaudreau coming in below a certain number (not sure exactly what it is offhand). Anything more than that and they'd need to go with option 2 which would likely mean getting very little of Smid's LTIR exemption and being in a cap crunch for most of the season. So the lack of cap space is definitely a factor right now.

I suspect it would be the Flames adding the draft pick, even with the Islanders. Probably not a 1st, but a 2nd or 3rd since Tavares is bigger, more proven, and has the lower cap hit (or likely will). Might also be the issue of NMC.
At any rate, I think its too soon to suspect trade rumors, though its admittedly becoming more likely than it would have been a month ago that the relationship has soured and we might not be seeing the 7-8 year contract we'd all like.
BT is most likely chatting up RW or cap dump options, I suspect nothing serious.

Correct...my point being that cap space, right now, is not a factor whatsoever in Gaudreau signing or not.

Of course it is. Do you think if there was no salary cap, Gaudreau wouldn't have been signed already?
They are trying to not overpay because there is a salary cap, a salary cap our current GM and previous one have put us against with some pretty awful contracts.

At any point they can waive Bollig, as an example, and gain 900K of cap space. Something they may actually do tomorrow or Sunday should it be needed.
I just don't believe that Treliving is done with his moves. Nothing in his brief history suggests he hasn't got a plan to deal with this.

oh dear god, is this where we are?
John Tavares and a first for Gaudreau is a no? An offer that the Islanders would never even consider?
Sweet baby Jesus.
