It's better than driving on all seasons for the winter, and depending on the tire it can be pretty good, though it won't match a true winter tire. Great option if you absolutely can't have two different sets.

I had Nokian WRG2/WRG3 on two vehicles for quite a while and they seemed to be perfectly fine in the ice and snow. I'm doing winters this year now though.

I agree. Read second sentence.
I'm saying at absolute minimum you need awd so you're not sliding around and getting stuck on all seasons.
Either way, if you can swing it you should have Winter tires.

In a city, there are no problems with all weather IMO they are adequate, but obviously winter tires are better. However, if you do the occasional drive on the highways in the mountains, there may be a benefit to having winters.
I have been using Nokian WRG2 for about 2 winters now. I am going to be grabbing winters for this winter because I don't feel comfortable driving these tires on a trip or two around the Golden/Revelstoke area.
In the city though, I would have no problem driving them for another winter for sure. Maybe if you're tight on cash, then getting all weather and using them this season, then using winters next season can work?

The other downside of Nokian WRG3 tires is they're bloody expensive. 50% more for my tire sizes.

I wrote a review about Nokians in this very thread years ago. Basically at around -20C they turn to poo.

I had them on my Highlander for a few years and am switching back to winter/all seasons. I never felt they gripped as well as true winter tires do, and they ran out of tread fairly quickly for me.

They are OK for traction (IMHO 75% of a winter tire) but I would say they have 30% of the braking abilities of a winter tire. They are a compromise.
It irked me to watch this Kal Tire guy talk some lady out of winters for all weathers. She came in wanting Winters, and talked her down to AW's emphasizing the benefits (mainly cost) but didn't talk about the compromises.
Speaking of Kal Tire, they did a craptastic job today. Used my summer wheel lugs on my winter wheels despite me leaving separate bags marked summer & winter. The summer lugs stick out an extra 1/2" so they looked fairly ridiculous. And they didn't chalk the summers position for rotation.
This is why I do my own rotations... (I was buying new winters today)

Nokian All weather tires are just rebranded winter tires with a high tread wear rating. Apparently Kal approached Nokian about rebranding them for the North American market.

I put Nokian WRG3s on my wife's car a few years ago and thought they performed very well, at least for our needs which is mostly driving around the city. The downside on the Nokians is that they're only available for select sizes so could never find them for my own car. But I noticed this year that Toyo has come out with an all-weather tire of its own (the Celsius CUV) and was happy to see they manufactured the Celsius in my size. Online reviews compare them favorably to the Nokians so I just bought them a few days ago. Now waiting to get them installed.
I personally think all-weathers are perfect for places like Calgary. I probably wouldn't recommend them for more snowy climates though.

On my old car, I had all weathers and on my new car I have all seasons and winters. Both were compact cars that I mainly drive in the city. I've driven on highways in the winter when it's snowing or icy patches but not really bad weather.
I found driving on all weathers and winters to be pretty much the same.
I live in Saddleridge which gets crazy dumps of snow from time to time and got stuck once with each car (in my back alley) but was able to drive out of each situation.

I still have summer tires on my car and I was going to change them this weekend but I decided I would just park the car for the weekend and do it next weekend (forecast looks much nicer) when the weather is nicer so I can properly wash the car and clean the wheels before storage.

To stud or not to stud - what's everyone's opinion?
I run *gasp* all weather tires on my truck (Goodyear Duratracs) and they're great. My girlfriends Crosstrek however with stock tires is by far the worst vehicle I have ever driven on slippery highways and that includes lifted trucks on mud tires. So after surviving last winter, by using my truck to go to the mountains, it's time for some winters. Am I over reacting going straight for studs? Primary use will be highway.

I've tried studs before but I thought they were loud and annoying. I didn't think it was worth the extra for studs. IRC it also has worse grip on snow but is phenomenally better on ice.
