If that is Gross's game plan, to wait until the 11th hour before signing, I think it may be wise for the flames to let Johnny sit a few games. I'm basing this off a presumption that Gaudreau is a highly competitive person and doesn't want to miss any regular season games. This way Gross is getting pressure from both sides as the flames want Gaudreau and he starts missing paycheques.
It's my hope that this only lasts a few games at most, as I don't see Gross and Johnny signing anything until the season is almost here.

I think Johnny missing the first few games against Edmonton is a major missed opportunity for free goals and assists.

Flames are holding the red rally today, would be something if they announced a deal at that event.

If and when this deal gets done, is your guy's opinion of Johnny/Treliving changed in any way, or does everyone just kind of move on?

Take out the words "Johnny Gaudreau" and replace with "professional athlete" and you get a more neutral opinion on the matter.

It's business. Full stop.
Once it's done, Johnny can get back to being a hockey player. And Flames fans love it when he does that.

I'd imagine Johnny is chomping at the bit to get on the ice with his teammates. This whole thing is probably more frustrating for him than anyone else. Of course none of us make $7 million per year, so it's hard to put ourselves in his shoes. But if I were Johnny, I'd tell Gross enough is enough and just get the damn deal done. $6.7 million, $7, $7.5...Either way he's a very wealthy man and his family is set up for generations. When it comes to that much money, is a $1 million gap really that big of a difference in the grand scheme of things? Sadly I guess it is. From a fan's point of view it just seems ridiculous that we might have to start the season without our best player over a measly $1 million.

Johnny is justified to want to be paid like Tarasenko if he is going to sell 3 UFA years.
Treliving is justified to want Johnny's cap hit to be appropriate to his service.

Depends on the deal, but so far my opinions haven't changed. Just the business side of things that we don't hear about much, just high profile because of the calibre of player.
Not a huge fan of this agent though

Move on. These guys know whatever they agree to has significant impact on them personally for the next number of years. They have to be comfortable with it and that's why it's taking so damn long.

I think what this goes to show is that hockey players these days are mercenaries, and you should never get too attached to any individual. It's not an indictment against Gaudreau, we'd all do the same, but hockey today is more of a business transaction then ever.
The lesson is, always cheer for the laundry. Enjoy the players while they are here, but don't make them your heroes.

Would be great to have the deal done, and both sides secrative on it.
On Wednesday, during the 6h long pregame ceremonies where the Oilers honor everyone including the water boys from the 1984 season, have JG jump out of the crowd and onto the empty Flames bench, completely upstaging the whole ceremony.
So ends my Captaincruch-esque dream sequence.

We know that the Flames are notoriously secretive and tight-lipped about all things contract-related. Not much news ever escapes their camp, and this is no different.
Remember Friedman when he said he was talking to BT and he paused and "wanted" to say something, then didn't. That's good.
Suspect any leakage is coming from the other end, and that it's intended to put pressure on the Flames.
OTOH all of the "leakage" could simply be speculation in the absence of anything whatsoever substantial.
Keep the faith, stay patient and let BT do what he (or the owners) think is best for the team. They may be right - they may be wrong - but at the end of the day it's their money and our hearts.

With Shinkaruk going down that must mean they're confident that Gaudreau will be here for game 1, right?

@RyanNPike
With the current group of players in camp, #Flames have about $6.633m in cap space (2G, D7, 13F).
@RyanNPike
Even if they send Vey ($700k) down, it'll be REALLY tough for #Flames to sign Gaudreau without LTIR for Smid.
Silver lining maybe the Flames have to wait until LTIR for Gaudreau's deal getting announced?

Can Flames only put Smid on LTIR once the season starts? Let's hope that's what they're waiting for...
